Unloaded merms will never be able to reach their houses, nor despawn, thus leaving their houses empty forever without spawning new, unless you lead lost merms to their houses or just kill them.
Its mega annoying, because you will often lose merms in the wilds, due to unexpected turn of events and so on...
This one thing practically makes Wurt unplayable and broken.
1) Hire some Merms
2) Lead them away from their houses
3) Wait for them to lose food contract
4) Unload them by running away or jumping through wormholes, etc...
5) They will never come back to their houses nor those can spawn new merms.
6) Come back to the same place where you lost them, after 500 days, and you will see that they are still there, trying to find their way to the houses.
