Can't quite confirm this for normal toadstool, cause i fought misery one, boomshroms seem to deal their total damage (like 150 base for misery) to shadow creatures, both passive and attacking, it's made this atrocious fight slightly better, but, still, i don't think this is intended behaviour.
(its on a current game version, as of 13.07.2023 its v562556)
Steps to Reproduce
Fight misery toadstool on >70% sanity (or better yet on >15%)
Lure shadow creatures on boomshroms.
Watch shadow creatures get exploded to shreds.
