Steam friends not showing up

I'm not sure if this qualifies as a bug but my steam friends don't show up with the "friends" icon next to their server when I'm playing. In addition, filtering the server list by friends eliminates their servers even though they are playing. I found that to be very odd. 

Steps to Reproduce

1. See friend playing in server

2. Filter server list by friends (nothing else) and they get filtered out

It's also not just 1 specific steam friend. It happens to multiple friends in my steam account and they weren't recent adds either. However, I do have a friend icon next to some other friends who are in my steam list which makes it even more weird to me.
