Shadow Chester won't drop it's content after dying.

I don't understand, why was it closed? Did I do something wrong?

The new Shadow Chester is linked with Maxwell's new Shadow Dimension storing system, like a Ender Chest from Minecraft. Your items aren't gone, they're safely stored in there, so if you want them back now after the Maxwell rework you'll either need to go Maxwell and craft a Magician's Top Hat to get them back or make a Magician's Chest that everyone else can use, otherwise you'll have to do the entire process of turning a new Chester into a Shadow Chester.

Oh. So Shadow Chester, Magician's Chest and Magician's Top Hat are only interfaces to access the items, I get it. But that is a bit sad, other characters must have or play a Maxwell in case Shadow Chester dies.
