I built the mighty gym next to an edge in the caves. After exiting the mighty gym, Wolfgang appeared standing out of bounds, in the void between the cave floors. Crossing back over was not possible, re-entering the gym was also not possible.
(It may of course be possible to escape this state somehow without dying, perhaps by being passed an orange or purple staff or desert stone to teleport with; or if you can get into another structure such as a tent without standing directly on top of it).
I built a mighty gym right in a corner with cave void to the southwest and northwest of it (I think, had no compass). I got in it, waited for the automatic mini game completion skill to raise Wolfgang's mightiness to maximum, at which point he got out and was out of bounds.
