DST out of memory

Every time I try to host my servers, I see the loading screen for a while, then the game window goes black and I get a popup telling me "Don't starve together is out of memory and must shut down. If you have any mods installed consider disabling some of them and trying again."

Details:
I have no mods, never have used them
I have been playing the game since it was still in beta and never experienced the problem before
I had three worlds saved and deleted one of them, still the same problem
it started after the forge event rolled out (I'm just playing the standard game)
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game, and validating my files via steam, still isn't working
I don't own the core game at this time, only DST
