dontstarve_steam_x64 "memory bloat" after the latest update

Before the update 634023, RAM usage by the game was usually around 4GiB. After the patch, RAM usage dropped to ~3 GiB, but after a few minutes the game freezes for a moment and RAM usage suddenly rises above 4 GiB and remains at that level. But aside from that sudden freeze this doesn't affect the gameplay, and the game continues to run as if nothing happened.

There's nothing in the game logs, and dmesg and journalctl also show no abnormalities. Weird.

[edit]

with a little help from a bash script I looked at the RAM usage, memory consumption spikes sharply and consistently after ~8-10 minutes and it doesn't matter if I'm actually playing or if the game is paused and running in the background. on the graph - paused game with caves enabled, running in the background, tested without mods ofc:

Steps to Reproduce

Launch the game on Linux.
Play for about 10 minutes.
The game freezes for a split second and RAM usage suddenly increases by about 1 GiB.

User Feedback

yeah even without caves enabled there’s still a massive spike in RAM usage by dontstarve_steam_x64 (in KB):

So the latest stable Steam version introduced this change:

Native titles will execute in 'Steam for Linux runtime 1.0 (scout)' by default, instead of the legacy runtime environment.
This behavior is consistent with Steam Deck and promotes better compatibility across all Linux desktop distributions.

I was hoping this might fix the memory leak issue but unfortunately it’s still there.

Update: This time, out of curiosity, I started monitoring the games VRAM usage as well and bingo! At the moment when RAM usage spikes VRAM usage drops sharply.

before:

and after:

I have no idea whether this sudden increase in RAM usage and drop in VRAM usage is caused by the game or if it's an issue with the Nvidia driver. DST is the only game where I experience this problem.
