Computer freezes on transition between Surface and Caves

Pretty much what it says on the tin. I've been having an intermittent issue for the past few months where my computer fully freezes up while going between the surface and the caves. (I'm pretty sure it's also happened when going both ways, but the past few times it's been only Surface -> Caves.) Most of the time, it's been while playing with mods, but I've been able to reproduce it without mods. The files attached to this post are on a modless attempt to reproduce this.

The problem doesn't seem to be hardware-related inasmuch as it's not a hardware-limiting factor. The NVIDIA 3060 Ti works well enough to run plenty of more demanding games, and the hardware isn't getting rate-limited in any way I can see. (I've attached a Task Manager screenshot showing what my computer is typically doing during the freeze.)

I haven't really noticed any patterns regarding what might be causing it aside from potentially other stuff running in the background making it more likely. (For example, a video in the background. Even something like the Balatro Remix video looping in the background.) It's probably something computer-specific, but I'm kind of running out of things to try.

I've attached my dxdiag and zipped cluster folder to this just in case you can see anything. As far as I can tell, nothing gets saved aside from the #141st transfer from one server to the other being successful.

Steps to Reproduce

1. Create and Generate a new server with Caves enabled. Mods were unrelated to issue.

2. Enter world as any character. (Wilson was used in this case.)

3. Obtain resources for Pickaxe.

4. Find sinkhole and break.

5. Enter sinkhole into Caves

6. Enter stairway onto Surface.

7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 until computer freezes.

User Feedback

Hi. Naturally, I've been messing around with stuff since I posted this, and I've found something a bit more concrete/weird.

Since I'm a more advanced Windows user, I have a few things enabled or set up that might cause issues.

First off, I tested if the AppHangTransient issue has typical fixes. Some people state that it's usually a paging file issue, so I decided to do a Disk Cleanup and updated my paging file settings to be manual and pretty big. I then performed the test described above while checking up on the paging file resource utilization. After an in-game day and a half of going up and down, I caused it to crash my computer. Probably a good thing to do, but not the direct cause of this issue.

Next, I tested removing the Virtualization and WSL features from Windows. Windows' WSL and Virtualization issues have been kinda hit or miss for me, after all. After doing that and updating my computer with the most recent patches (there was a very recent patch for some drivers and a recent windows patch), I re-ran the test. However, instead of crashing my computer, I got the game to get into an infinite loading loop, I think. (see attached image) Hitting Cancel brings me back to the main menu. The game seemed to save "correctly", too. Haven't been able to replicate this after in-game days of testing, but still wanted to post.

Posting this for completeness' sake just in case someone has a similar situation; this might help.

Nope. Still crashes, just very sporadically. That infinite loading loop is just something different, I presume.

Amusingly enough, doing the aforementioned stuff gave me hope that it was fixed because I spent hours actually doing that test over and over, and it didn't happen. However, I decided to try a world normally, and it happened within the first 15 days of normal play.
