Cave have disappeared

I had made a server before the caves update and I had added basalt to my world using the console to get caves. I have had caves for awhile and I had found lots and lots of thulecite for walls. Just recently while playing, I had quit to take a break and when I came back to my world, all of my caves were missing! I cannot add a cave entrance into my world and I am not sure if basalt will help. I had checked the settings of my server and it said caves were off and I cannot turn that setting back on. Can i have any help getting caves back?
