I was playing as Maxwell and trying to build and place the Prestihatitator with rabbits, wood slats, and Magician's Top Hat (I haven't tried it with using a regular top hat yet) causes it to not work. The item disappears and you have to try to rebuild and place it. Thankfully, the ingredients are returned to the inventory.
ADDENDUM: works fine with a regular top hat
