Controller Support: Is there a way to make button on a controller work like spacebar?

I know using a keyboard and mouse are definitely the way to go when playing games of this nature; however, most days I'm always on the go. Most of the play time I can muster with the game are in the most of inconvenient of places. So my question is, is there a mod somewhere or a setting at least to make the X button on my controller work similar to the spacebar on a keyboard setting? I noticed the spacebar auto gathers items in a small proximity of the player, whereas a controller gets locked onto something stupid like a stump or whatever. Thanks!
