Issues changing sprites

I wanted to fool around with making a character and i downloaded a sample character and watched a tutorial blablabla.

 

Everything went well until the sprites. Changing sprites has been really weird for me. At first i tried swapping the sample characters textures with wilsons to make it easier to edit. It did not work at all. I tried switching around everything and nothing worked.

I ended up resetting everything. I figured maybe you are not supposed to switch textures, just edit them.

 

I just wanted to fool around first so i changed the torso to purple. It worked and i saw the changes in the game.

The sample character i downloaded had a skirt and a tail. I tried to remove the skirt, and it once again worked.

 

After that, everything went downhill. I tried removing the tail. It did not work at all. I changing the torso again, it did not work. I tried changing anything, it did not work at all.

 

 

 

Am i missing something? It seems like things only work randomly.
