Today I have been training about making characters. I have a very good idea for making a mod, and blahblahblah.

So my doubt is:

  •  The gold rule of Don't Starve Modding says that, if you make your own artistic stuff, there is no problem. So if I make a character, like "springy" (Search in Googe Images), but I have draw it all by my self, is all right? Or as it is from The Simpsons, would I not be able to put it in the Steam Workshop? Could I use original image sources for the portraits?
  • Also, if I make an ampliation of an existing mod, like Screech (a mod from a mod), am I using the material of another source and then doing something wrong?

My "Springy" looks creepy but sweet, I am proud for making my first character it in 6 hours.

I would have uploaded it, but I prefer to be sure of doing the things right.

Also, sorry for my strange and not usual English, not my language.

Answer, and please, don't starve!

Making a character based on a character from another property is fine. It's fanart.

Fan works are allowed, and protected, by a number of laws. And most of the time, the original creators absolutely love seeing fan works!

Modding somebody else's mod, though, is a bit different.

Contact the creator, and see if they're okay with it. Credit them, and link to the original mod, if they are.

I think it's best to actually make your mod require the original mod - I created a small mod that alters my own creation, as an optional patch. It's quite easy to do, it just depends on load priority - if the same value is set differently in two different mods, the one that loads last will be used by the game.

For example, I could create a costume mod for my own mod that, when enabled, would change the in-game model. All I'd have to do is create a secondary mod that has lower load priority than the main one that replaces the character model. It still requires the main mod, and any changes to the main mod will not require alteration to the costume mod.

This same approach could be applied to someone else's mod, but it would still be polite to ask the creator if they're okay with it, first.

Yup. I've seen plenty of characters from other games, TV shows, etc. If it's a mod of someones else's mod, you'd need their permission. Some modders would be happy, but others aren't too fond of the idea. I, being a total psycho, am STRONGLY against the idea.post-286034-0-30759300-1391843580_thumb.

But that's just me.

Thank you so much for your answers. Have helped a lot.

I will made the save and portraits images by myself, and then I'll upload my "Springy" character. (Not so fanart at this point, glups.)

About the mod I was thinking to make, it's going to be a lot of work to do, so, when I start working, I'll be here asking for help. And of course, before launching it (if I do), I will ask for their "Ok".

Also, I wanna know how the Steam Workshop works.

Thank you, again.

Steam Workshop is very simple - you get the tools from Steam to upload your mod to the Workshop. Then it appears on the Workshop for people to download. Whenever you update the mod, you upload the new version, and it goes out to all your subscribers.
