(not sure if I can post this in the DST forums so I'll just put it here)

This is just a quick tangent because ultimately in the grand scheme of things none of this really matters, but I think she's weirdly enough one of the more dynamic and well rounded Don't Starve survivors and she doesn't get the attention she deserves. To many, Walani is the lazy and chill beach surfer girl with some of the funniest dialogue in the game (Not biased.) But I was talking to a friend a few days ago about her, and I noticed a little bit of it myself, Walani has kind of some weird and out of place dialogue for things.

Dorsal Fin- "I thought I was the only one around here who had fallen to pieces."
Blue Whale Carcass (all stages)- "You don't have to be sad anymore..."
Pond-"It's kind of hard to look at myself these days,"
Ghost- "You deserve a rest."
Birchnut Tree (burnt)- "Saying sorry won't bring it back."
Sapling (withered)- "Looks like I feel."

Walani also has some sort of past that we exactly don't know about, something a little sinister if we continue to look through some dialogue

Snake Oil- "I wasn't born yesterday."
Watery Grave- "That wound's a little too fresh."
Post Card of the Royal Palace- "Could I send this back home?"
Voodoo Doll- "If I only had a pin..."
Cutlass Supreme- "It's been awhile since I held one of these."
White Whale (Corpse)- "Vengeance is mine."

Not sure where else to put this but Walani is also incredibly scared of the dark, not Charlie but the dark itself.

Torch and Miner Hat out- "WHERE DID MY LIGHT GO?!"
Entering darkness- "H-holy geez, it's dark! HELP! Help me!"
Entering light- "Sweet crispy light! I missed you!"
Pig House (occupied, lights off)- "Turn it back on! PLEASE!"

So, clearly Walani has gone through something. It's worth noting that what's next is just speculation, and this is where head cannoning and theories and stuff come into play. Just a warning.

Walani shows signs of depression, partially because a lot of them blend in with her vibe already. The constant desire to sleep and eat for example are some symptoms of depression that she displays a lot (Putting all of them here would be too much but just note it's there). A friend of mine said survivor's guilt, which could make sense. I'm not saying she's Leo Whitefang, but something I realized while writing this is that it's more likely she was a naval officer than a pirate. her examination quote for the Captain's hat is "If only the boss could see me now." The captain's hat's design is based on a naval officer's hat, not a pirate's hat. (seeing as she doesn't say that for the pirate's hat and saves a pretty generic quote for it leans me towards this way) What comes next is theory crafting, but if we use this information we can paint some type of story where likely, Walani was part of the Navy and saw/experienced some things (maybe things that gave her the fear of the dark) and what she saw changed her so much she turns to a pacifist instead, perhaps getting depressed along the process which is why she's much more laid back and lazy compared to what she would have been like before she joined the navy. I'm writing fanfic here I know but there's not a ton to work with with the singleplayer characters.

I know I might be looking a bit too deep into it but at the same time this is the same developers who gave a triple entendre to the title "Don't Starve Together" (Don't Starve together, Don't Starve TWOgether, Don't Starve To-Get-Her [Charlie]) so is it so much to think they could have applied this level of depth to a character? Maybe. But if I have a theory mixed with a lethal amount of copium, it's that Walani was (or still is God willing) planned for DST where she'll get a lore expansion and that they put all this worldbuilding in here to make a backdoor for themselves. I also think Klei expected her to be a lot more popular than she actually is, which might have also influenced this level of effort for her. I don't see Woodlegs or Wheeler getting this much character growth. There is the off chance that whoever was writing her just wrote one line of dialogue, passed the script to the left, and let the cycle continue with their buddies until it was done and it left it a little disjointed, but I like to think this was done on purpose.

Overall, I think that she's kinda misunderstood and is likely more deep than people give her credit for and that they should really add her to dst that'd be cool. Or at the very least give her a short, I mean you gave one to Wagstaff!

Note, I also want to say that just because she shows signs of depression or survivor's guilt doesn't mean every one of her lines has a double meaning or is secretly sad. She's still a DS survivor, most of her lines are going to be played for laughs instead of serious storytelling.

I don’t think this is a completely insane theory.

I love Shipwrecked, and I was playing as Walani recently when I really noticed the dissonance of some of the quotes you mentioned.

I have no idea how correct you are, but your idea is very plausible.
