What can Klei do to make more people want to play Wes?

Valid concern. The easy solution would be to have a setting to disable popups about unspent insight points (like you can with scrapbook alerts). Maybe also add a way to access the insight tree somewhere that isn't the character select, or the little "Inspect Self" button on the toolbar I constantly forget exists?

Not as important, really, but I used to think you could only access the skill tree through the popups.

Not only would this work well for a Wes "whoops-all-downsides" skill tree, I sometimes enjoy playing without certain affinity skills so I don't get overreliant on them when they are an option.
