So I was on the server list, deciding which server I would play on, as usual. I typically only play on Klei Official servers, just a preference thing. I filtered for Klei Official only, and as I scrolled the list to see which server looked the most interesting, one caught my eye. Its name was all… distorted and glitchy. The player count read “2/,” seemingly missing the max player limit. But regardless, I decided to join it anyway.

I loaded in, chose Maxwell as my character, and joined the world. As soon as I joined, one of the people online (forgot their name…) immediately said

“Welcome, don’t acknowledge it”

“...It?” I typed in chat after a second or two.

“IT. You know what IT is.” They responded.

After thinking for a second (probably not long enough) I typed into chat “oh, are you talking about the glitchy server name?”

The other person, who had been silent before that said “oh boy,” and the person I was talking to said “not again” but then I realized I was. Somewhere else. It looked like one of the deserts, but was completely devoid of any terrain. I typed into chat again.

“Guys?”

“Where am I?”

No response. I then realized that my username didn’t appear next to my messages. I checked the player list. Server name was still glitched, but now I was the only person online. But… my own username was... Distorted. As I looked at it, it got… more distorted.

I decided to stop looking at the player list. I hit pause, deciding to leave the server, but then I realized something was off again. You know that text that says “Not paused! (Seriously, it’s not)” at the top? I’m pretty sure that for a second, it said something like “Too late! (Seriously, it is.)” before reverting back to normal. I clicked on disconnect, but instead of the usual confirm message, it was completely blank with the only option being to cancel.

I decided to walk around for a bit. Eventually, I somehow found another player, a Wigfrid. They had a few cosmetics, so I could tell they were a real player, but when I hovered over them, their username was distorted as well. I decided to speak to them.

“Where are we?”

In response they said “Nöt ön the server we came fröm,” and just walked around a bit. Then they stopped moving again and asked “Do you have any items ön yöu?” I checked and, sure enough, I did still have my Codex Umbra. I used it to summon a servant, but instead of a servant appearing, Maxwell just said “Great. It’s not working.” And the durability went down with nothing happening.

“It’s not working.”

“Does force-quitting work?”

In response, the Wigfrid simply said “Nö.”

At that point, I realized I didn’t have any stats. No hunger, health, sanity, or even time of day.

The Wigfrid started moving, and I decided to follow her. As we walked through the empty plain, it transitioned to dusk. So there was time here, and presumably also night. I realized the Wigfrid didn’t have their helmet or spear on them.

“So what was the deal with that?” “The other server?” I stopped to type.

“Nöbody knöws,” is all the Wigfrid said before they continued moving.

At some point, I must’ve zoned out while following the Wigfrid, because I took my eyes off the screen for just a second and when I looked back they weren’t anywhere near me. I typed in chat calling for them, but no response. I decided to move in the direction we were going before. I never saw them again, but I did see someone else, a Willow.

“Oh hi” I greeted them, before asking “So how many people are here? I saw a Wigfrid but lost track of them”

They stopped for a moment, even using the sitting emote, and responded “If you take your eyes off someone they seem to vanish. I saw a WX who keeps talking about how we’re screwed, and a Warly.”

After a few more seconds, they said “The Warly still has the items he got from the other server but whenever he tries to use any of them his character just says random quotes.”

“Something like “Oh no” or “What have we done”.”

“All I have is my lighter but despite the durability being at like 80% still it doesn’t do anything”

She then equipped their lighter to demonstrate. But it didn’t light, and her character just said “Ugh, stupid thing! Why isn’t it turning on!?”

Curious, I used my Codex again, and this time, Maxwell said “Still not working.”

I was typing something into chat about how it changed, but then Night came in.

Instead of his usual in-darkness quote, all Maxwell said was “Well. Nothing I can do, I suppose.” The willow didn’t say anything. I wasn’t sure if they were even still there. I moved around a bit, and… Charlie wasn’t appearing. Apparently even Maxwell noticed this, because later on he said “Strange. She’s taking her time.”

And then the sun rose, and he said “She wasn’t there… What is this place? Where am I?”

Fed up with this, I force-quitted the game. It actually worked without issue.

I then relaunched the game because despite going through that, I still wanted to play some DST.

I loaded in, everything seemed normal, (actually now that I think about it I don’t remember the music playing. It should’ve been playing.) and I just joined a random Klei Official server with an ORDINARY name, and ORDINARY player count.

I loaded back into the empty desert world, as Maxwell. As soon as I finished realizing this, he said “Of course that wouldn’t work. Why would it be that easy?” Safe to say I was getting a bit uncomfortable with how aware of this he was being. I tried to use my Codex again, just to see what he’d say this time.

The third time, he said “I don’t think it’s going to do anything else.”

And the fourth time, he said “Whatever this place is, it’s not going to allow for it.”

And the fifth time, he said, with a talking animation that felt like it was staring right at me, “Can you stop? It’s obviously not working.”

I took my hands off the mouse and keyboard for a second, and then he said, with his normal animation “Thank you.” Seeing that that wasn’t working, I did the only thing left. Walk.

Later on, I met another player. This time, a Webber.

“Where the hell am I” they said as soon as they saw me.

“Beats me. Purgatory or something.” I responded to them.

“Can we leave”

“I don’t think so. When I alt-f4’d I ended up back here as soon as I tried to join another server.”

They stopped for a second, and then seemingly force-quitted despite what I just said.

Their disconnect message seemed normal, but then I realized there were quotation marks around the words “left” and “game.” (And of course their username was distorted beyond recognition but I think that goes without saying at this point)

For a while I just left the game open while watching youtube on my other tab. I looked over at the game at one point, and saw Maxwell speaking. He just said “We can’t just stand around. There has to be a way out.” Deciding I might as well try, in the very unrealistic but still non-zero chance that this was somehow dev-intended and there was actually a way out, I continued moving around. I used the Codex Umbra a few more times, resulting in a few more disgruntled and casually-fourth-wall-breaking lines from Maxwell, before I realized the book was on its last usage. I decided I didn’t want to be without it, so I didn’t use it that last time.

After some more walking, and another night without even a hint of Charlie, I once again stumbled across another player, a Warly. (Didn’t that Willow mention a Warly?)

“I’m guessing you aren’t able to cook anything,” I opened to them.

“No this guy just keeps saying random things,” they replied surprisingly fast, like they’d said it before. They then presumably tried to use their items, which just made Warly spam multiple lines while talking, most of which were “What have we done?” or “No no no no…” or “We’re doomed…” or something along those lines.

While talking to him, I tried to examine the Codex Umbra, but ended up using it instead. It broke, and Maxwell said “Well, I guess that’s it, then.” And then sat down. I couldn’t make him get up no matter what I pressed or clicked. I tried to type, but none of the messages went through. The Warly just moved back and forth a bit seeing if I’d do anything, and then walked away silently.

I force-quitted again, and stopped playing for the day.

When I reopened the game the next day, it was immediately back to the exact sight I left it on. Still couldn’t move Maxwell, and all he ever spoke was a “*Sigh*” when I reopened the game.

I stopped being able to minimize the tab that the game was in.

I type this while I still have the game open on my other monitor. Does anyone know how to fix this?
