Malbatross overhaul

Recommended Posts

No intro just read the post. Relevant to the beta because of ocean qol

Locating Malbatross:

Spoiler

In addition to finding malbatross at deep bass shoals (now rarer though), her shadow may also fly past. Following this shadow will lead to another, which must be followed. Eventually after following the shadow a few times, malbatross herself appears. Here is some rough concept art:

This would:

-Add ocean hunts to the game in a form (often requested)

-Add an additional way to locate Malbatross

-Add more life to the ocean

Malbatross battle

Spoiler

Malbatross now remains aggroed permanently after it reaches half health, and flies out of melee reach. Cannons and other ranged weapons must be used. This would encourage cannon usage and stretch Malbatross 5000 health a bit to make it more on par with other bosses.

Malbatross also gains a new attack, using it's wings to cast a strong wind that shapes water into a slow moving, but impactful tsunami. This tsunami can deal AoE damage across the entire boat with maximal impact and will instantly raise players wetness to max if they are hit. A tsunami can also spawn with ship fragments, and will puncture holes in your boat. Tsunamis can be dodged by simply moving out of the way, but Malbatross can cast out multiple tsunamis in quick succession in different patterns, requiring skillful movement. Remember, a tsunami hitting your boat isn't the end of the world.

Malbatross Loot

Spoiler

The waterfowl is capable of filtering ocean water (can be refilled using ocean water).

The winged sail summons a wave when a player begins opening it, hitting the boat as soon as the sail is fully raised and boosting it forward. This wave is harmless to players and the boat. The winged sail also turns faster.

Not only is the Malbatross' loot be more useful, but Malbatross also affects the ocean on death. Many parts of the ocean, such as bull kelp, sea stacks, sea weeds, and spider nests and trees in the waterlogged biome. During the process of regeneration, the ocean would be filled with waves to show the activity occuring in the ocean.

Salt formations could be changed to not regenerate unless Malbatross is defeated to make fighting it somewhat of a necessity. Cookie cutters could also follow in this pattern. However, I'm not sure how happy people would be with this change.

New ocean life after malbatross is defeated would also be interesting. Marotters could be one of these?
