Can a modded character react to another modded character?

Hi! I'm incredibly new to modding and recently I've managed to make two characters for me and my friend to play. I noticed that in the speech scripts, they can have custom reactions to specific characters. Would it be possible to somehow input a modded/custom character into the speech code? I haven't touched it yet because I'm afraid of screwing it up, but if anyone knew how/if it were possible that would be awesome!!!
