Need Help Making a Custom Item for my Character Mod

I'm new to Don't Starve Together modding (and modding in general), and I have the basic character down, but I want to give them a custom item. To be more specific: I want to give my character something very similar to the fire or ice staff, but instead of getting set on fire or frozen, it would make the mob passive for a few moments until they would aggro again. Is there any way I could reskin or code a fire/ice staff to do that? And where would I have to put it in my character file and how would I make it to where they start with the item?

ayy, it wouldn't really help you, but still - you can look up character mods that have custom items and steal some stuff! (Lucario mod is a good template of custom crafts and items,and their items specify on something around staffs.)
