Use new colors when updating overlay meanings.

Recommended Posts

I've noticed a few times during updates that some of the overlays still use the same colors, but the meaning of the colors changes completely. For example, in previous versions of the electrical overlay, red used to indicate that you had way too much power in a wire and that it was going to break. Now, red means the exact opposite, in that there's no power on the line at all. This causes a lot of confusion for players who aren't paying attention to the fact that just the text in the color key has updated, and now they don't understand why it looks like their barely powered system is overloading.

If both the text and the color had been updated, it's a lot easier to see at a glance that something is different, and players would be more likely to read the new text. So for the electrical overlay, the change could have been from white = "ok", yellow = "a little too much", red = "way too much" to possibly white = "ok", brown = "too little", black = "no power".

When choosing the new colors, it also might be a good idea to keep color-blind players in mind. While for most, a change from red to green might be obvious, the change could be barely noticeable for a player who is color-blind if the new shade of green is the color-blind equivalent for the old shade of red.
