How do i make custom items for a character ?

Im currently modding a character. I would want to add to him a custom item. I tried to take one from an existing mod and rename it and reskin it , and tried to make it work.. but the game just crashed on me ... I have 2 ideas , either add him a skateboard or a staff.

Skateboard:  I could reskin a walking cane to look like he is riding a skateboard and make it slightly faster, but i have no idea how to make custom animations.

Or a staff: A pole thing that has increased range and about 30 damage.
 

Probably the second one is easier to do , but just wondering , is it even possible to make a skateboard ? thanks for reading !

for the SkateBoard, i think you can reference the boat in ShipwreckDLC

and what do you mean by reskin and rename, did you compile your .scml?

Skateboard looks like a huge and complex work, changing animation is usually hard. Better to keep things simple for a first mod.

You can what I did with my broccoli mod. Make it so you can change your characters build on keyhandler and make the second build without legs, expand the canvas of the torso sprites by certain amount of pixels, then add on legs and skateboard onto the torso.

Example:

The downside is your skateboard will look like its constantly floppin, we can imagine he's doing sick wheelie though?
