The Curator
Watching some older Let's Plays, noticed that Sinkhole were significantly different in the original singleplayer game. At least back then. Honestly using a rope to drop down into the abyss seems far more ominous and natural then there being a magical stone staircase that leads to and fro. There is a level of foreign unwelcome-ness that is destroyed by having this massive contrived staircase leading down into the caves, which basically says "yeah you can go here, see we even made stairs for you". Where as with the rope it's more like, you found this place, except you only got into it using a human machination to bridge the gap yourself. But also back then sinkholes didn't seem to have the tiles around them bare. Did Klei give a reason for why they changed that? Because they looked far more natural back then when it was just a pile of rocks in the middle of wherever; as opposed to now with a Red Cross insignia carved out of the ground around them which literally looks like the developers just artificially want to make it more visible. "Oh you're having trouble seeing that; okay we'll just remove everything around it except the ground itself so now it's impossible to not notice it" Suppose the Red Cross makes sense considering that Batsilisks are more of a sanity drainer for the actual player themselves so there should be a warning for it. Not only do they spawn pervasively against all logical fairness but their attack pattern is just obnoxious. The higher purpose of the Lureplant is for it to one day be placed by a Batsilisk infested sinkhole so that it may spawn kill them all for eternity. Yeah, the old design was better in my opinion too.
Tylordian
Charlie might want the survivors to go down, as Maxwell says "I know why you brought me down here.". The good side of Charlie wants them to do whatever the portal does, we do not yet know. Or it's just Charlie being Charlie and making a more elegant way to go into the caves. Donke60
I think it was just to match the asthetice same with the florid pastorn instead of the jury-rigged portal. And in Single player the rope is still there the entrance hasn't changed at all
DVGMedia
it was changed cause it was actually annoying to deal with the rope. though it was aesthetically pleasing it was just harder to get to and fro from the caves. the stair case is just easier to click on than a thin bit of rope especially if you are lagging. AnonymousKoala
I mean, after enough spelunking, it's not too unplausible to imagine the survivors started building these stairs.

KoreanWaffles
The real question is... Who's throwing down the rope?
brbrmensch
first: would be fun to break the rock from below if you climbed up from cave (in single ds you only had 1 entrance\exit per cave, it'd be either impossible to get out plugged sinkhole or would make no sense with rope) second: it is fun how pigs\bunnies and lobsters can use rope to travel alongside you, but can't climb stairs
