This guide has been designed to help you to manage your waveable skins and the DST shop. Skins are purely cosmetic items that players can use to customize their Characters, originally to distinguish players from each other. Without loss of generality: The value of a skin is the number of spools you get when unraveling the skin. A copy of an already owned skin is known as a duplicate, and it doesn't grant you access to more content. A waveable duplicate has no options besides unraveling it, so getting a duplicate (via drop or ingame shop) can be considered as only a drop of spools. A not owned skin will have its value increased by a factor of 3 because you will no longer have to use 3 skins of the same tier or 9 skins of the next lower tier to wave this skin. It's not like skins are worth only 1/3 when unraveling them but getting a new skin is 3 times more worth than getting just a duplicate. You'll neither win nor loose anything if you wave a skin, but the value of the woven skin won't be multiplied by 3 if it drops naturally (via drop or ingame shop) because the drop will drop as a duplicate. You might consider this before deciding to buy it on the shop, but the chances to get the right Elegant via the 15 drops every week is about 1 to 500, there's a good chance to get that skin in the next ~10 years if you keep trying every week. Unraveling a non-duplicate skin will grant you spools but in total you will loose twice the value of the skin, because to get that skin back you'll need to use 3 skins of the same tier, and unraveling it granted you only as many spools as one skin of the same tier. There are actual 3 different ways to obtain waveable skins: Get them as weekly drop Wave them with spools Buy them in the DST-Shop or as DLC While the Weekly Drop is the cheapest way to get any skin you want to, you'll not always get the skin you wanted and as stated above: Obtaining the proper elegant skin might take up to 10 years. Trading with other players is not an option because waveable skins aren't tradeable. So there are still 2 options left: Waving or buying. But which one is the more effective way? Do you spend more money by waving skins or by buying them? Many Chests in the DST-Shop grant you more skins for less money in case of if you don't own any skin included in this Chest and really want to obtain every skin included in this Chest. But there are exceptions, for example: Buying any non-Deluxe Winona Chest which contains 2 Skins (1x Elegant + 1x Distinguished) costs as much as the Forge Weapons Chest which grants you a total of 7 Elegants. If you buy the Forge Weapons Chest, unravel 4 Elegants and use them to wave all the skins available in the Winona Chest you'll get all the contents of the Winona Chest for the same cost but also 3 skins from the Forge Weapons Chest: More skins for the same cost. To manage cases like these I made a cheat sheet which analyzes every Chest available in the DST-Shop and returns the lowest price at which you could obtain every skin in the Chest. Column meanings: Spools/€: Spools/$: Not available yet: I need the cost of every Chest which is available on the sheet in $ in text, screenshots or another sheet. Use Spoiler please if posting these. Spools/Other currencies: Not available yet: I need the cost of every Chest which is available on the sheet in your currency in text, screenshots or another sheet. Use Spoiler please if posting these. When Klei first released the spools system, there was a lot of commotion about what the actual value of an Elegant was. People tried to deduce the value of an Elegant by analyzing Klei's in-game pricing. Of course, you can never really compare the value of a weavable Elegant to a non-weavable one. However, there is one way you can indirectly assess the monetary value of weavable skins. You can buy Distinguished skins off the Steam market and unravel them for cheap and efficient spools. But how efficient are they really? I took the time to do a full in-depth analysis of all Klei's available bundles inside their in-game shop, along-side the Steam store page, and put them up against the market value of Distinguished skins. For reference, here's a table documenting the spools per dollar of unravelling Distinguished skins at varying market prices. $0.03 is the lowest possible value any Steam market item can be priced, so that $0.01 can go to Steam, $0.01 to Klei, and $0.01 to the seller. I highlighted $0.16 and $0.17, as those are critical values that I will mention later. For each product, I'll document the cost, total spool value, spools per dollar value, and spools for dollar value assuming 10% tax. In each spoiler, I'll include the full breakdown of all the items contained in the product, and their respect spool value. I'll start from the most recently released products, and work my way back in time. I've excluded any products that are apart of a larger bundle, as they are more cost efficient to purchase (e.g. I won't include the Forge Armor Chest, as it is already included in the Magmatic Bundle). Wortox Deluxe Chest ($10.99) Total Spool Value: 8685 Spools per Dollar: 790.26 Spools per Dollar (10% Tax): 718.42 Wortox Chest ($6.99) Total Spool Value: 4695 Spools per Dollar: 671.67 Spools per Dollar (10% Tax): 610.61 Winona Deluxe Wardrobe ($12.99) Total Spool Value: 7695 Spools per Dollar: 592.38 Spools per Dollar (10% Tax): 538.53 Voxola Warehouse Chest ($3.99) Total Spool Value: 2895 Spools per Dollar: 725.56 Spools per Dollar (10% Tax): 659.60 Contenders Promo Chest ($12.99) Total Spool Value: 13995 Spools per Dollar: 1077.37 Spools per Dollar (10% Tax): 979.4 Beating Heart Chest ($4.99) Total Spool Value: 3450 Spools per Dollar: 691.38 Spools per Dollar (10% Tax): 628.53 Magmatic Bundle ($19.99) Total Spool Value: 54990 Total Unravel Value:18330 Spools per Dollar: 2750.88 Spools per Dollar (10% Tax): 2500.80 Unravelled Spools per Dollar: 916.96 Unravelled Spools per Dollar (10% Tax): 833.60 Complete Hallowed Nights Chest ($12.99) Total Spool Value: 18225 Spools per Dollar: 1403.00 Spools per Dollar (10% Tax): 1275.46 All Survivors Gorge Chest ($12.99) Total Spool Value: 25200 Spools per Dollar: 1939.95 Spools per Dollar (10% Tax): 1763.59 Gorge Belongings Chest ($9.99) Total Spool Value: 9450 Spools per Dollar: 945.95 Spools per Dollar (10% Tax): 859.95 All Verdant Spring Chest ($9.99) Total Spool Value: 12570 Spools per Dollar: 1258.26 Spools per Dollar (10% Tax): 1143.87 All Snowfallen Feast Chest ($9.99) Total Spool Value: 12570 Spools per Dollar: 1258.26 Spools per Dollar (10% Tax): 1143.87 All Survivors Gladiator Chest ($12.99) Total Spool Value: 24300 Spools per Dollar: 1870.67 Spools per Dollar (10% Tax): 1700.61 With an unravel spool value of 916.96 per dollar, the Magmatic Bundle is one of the most efficient source of spools. Unraveling Distinguished skins only becomes more cost efficient than purchasing and unraveling the contents of the Magmatic Bundle when purchased at $0.16 per Distinguished skin (or $0.17 assuming 10% tax). In fact, the Magmatic Bundle is so incredibly efficient, you could buy the Magmatic Bundle and unravel all its contents, craft everything in the Wortox Deluxe Chest, everything in the Winona Deluxe Wardrobe, and still have 1950 spools left over, while saving $3.98. Maybe that's also saying the Wortox and Winona bundles are a tad bit overpriced? Any instance where the Magmatic Bundle's spools per dollar unravel value (916.96) is greater than the spools per dollar value of a bundle, it's more cost efficient to purchase the Magmatic Bundle and unravel all its contents instead. For Example: The Wortox Deluxe Chest's spools per dollar value is 790.26, which is lower than 916.96, making it more efficient to purchase the Magmatic Bundle instead, or to purchase and unravel Distinguished skins off the market for $0.18 a piece. The Winona Deluxe Wardrobe's spools per dollar value is 592.38, which is lower than 916.96, making it more efficient to purchase the Magmatic Bundle instead, or to purchase and unravel Distinguished skins off the market for $0.25 a piece. There are a few more thing I would like to point out. Distinguished skins can be purchased in much smaller quantities, while you can only ever purchase the Magmatic bundle in its entirety at $19.99. If you choose to purchase a bundle via the Steam store page, it will register as a DLC on your account, meaning the items will carry over if Klei decided to release a public beta branch like they did with A New Reign, Gorge, and Forge. Lastly, purchasing content from the in-game store means you're going your money directly to Klei! if you want to show your support for them and all they do, I recommend you purchase the content from the in-game store instead.
