  1. Willow is based on novels about young people related to pyrokinesis, mainly “Firestarter” (or “Charlie” in some editions) by Stephen king: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firestarter_(novel) During her childhood, Charlene ("Charlie") McGee had a teddy bear which she ignited on fire by simply looking at it, through the power of her mind. Bernie is not only based on Firestarter, he´s inspired by the classic haunted dolls, animated by magic or spirits, who will harm or protect certain persons. One of the big traits of Charlie is having a strong (but fiery) temper and little patience, always manifesting in her behavior. Willow acts in this way too: -"You jerk! Let me in!" (Pig House occupied, lights off) -"A cone full of jerks." (Killer Bee Hive) -"Jerks that slither." (Snake) -"Jerks that swim." (Sea Hound) -"Stay back, you big jerk!" (Krampus) -"Hurry up, dirtpile. Feed me!" (Farm, growing) -"But I want more berries!" (Berry Bush, picked) -"Stupid rabbits. Come out so I can eat you." (Rabbit Hole) While Telekinesis is the ability to influence actions in objects with the mind, Pyrokinesis is the ability of creating and controlling fire by thought: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrokinesis The name Willow is related to magic, witchcraft, to be more exact. For example the willow tree is know as "witchs´s tree" due to its parts being used as ingredients for potions, and rituals in old times by witches and warlocks. Interestingly Willow was also portrayed as a witch in her Funko Pops and Halloween art. "A symbol of stake-burnt sisterhood." (Fiery Witch's Hat description) In old times, people accused of witchcraft were burned in stakes. Between 1920 & 1930, Japan started to produce lighters under the brand “Willow”, with different models and decorations. One of the most popular models. (Looks familiar, right?)
  2. This video is based on Tapirus (Broken Dice)'s post "A full explanation about Willow's Design", thank you for approaching me to suggest making video on such interesting topic. Quite timely topic too given Willow's recent rework. Anyways, enjoy! Original Post :
  3. So.. after the video on Willow's abilities there are still some questions that are unclear. One of these unanswered questions relate to Willow's time before the orphanage we saw in the video. I believe the new skin provides a lot of clues about this time and this what I'm gonna explore here. First of all, "forlorn" is a very telling word in itself usually refereed to abandonment and misery "Some say, that Rauens foster forlorne children, The whil'st their owne birds famish in their nests: " Titus Andronicus, Act II, Scene III forlorn doll and children describe many times abandoned children, abandoned and miserable dolls... and this is precisely what we see when we look at the description of the individual pieces of the "Forlorn Doll" set 1. Let's start with the "head" there are very interesting elements here: once-sweet, abandonment, bitterness, resentment this is Willow's underlying emotional state. She feels alone, thrown away like an old doll noone want's to play with anymore, full of bitterness and resentment "Why did you leave me?" --- We don't see this in her video... but it is clear there is someone in her past... Who is this person she is talking about here? We are gonna talk about this in a later point, for now let's move to the next description. 2. Now the frock. The red brooch is probably an allusion to her "fire" power... something that cannot be missed... something big and beautiful as fire can indeed be... I'm not quite sure if the brooch is supposed to refer a red gem.. again a nice "fire" reference... but the brooch from the portrait to the actual skin is a bit different and the red gem's form is a double diamond rather than this.. so I'm not so sure... but the fire reference is probably more prevalent 3. the sleeves' description This is probably the most telling of all the pieces. Some elements of importance here: late grandmother, must legally be This is probably the person who in Willow's eyes "left her." Most probably her granny died of old age and then she was placed in an orphanage as children with no relatives "must legally be" Maybe she even wandered around in the house like a haunted doll chased by Shadow Creatures in the attic before she was found and sent to the orphanage... Probably in Willow's eyes she feels that her grandma didn't wanted to take her with her... and "once-sweet" Willow feels the abandonment and sorrow of her granny's passing and her solitude grew even more when she ended up in a place that made her feel like a forgotten, unwanted old doll. There is indeed some evidence in the game of her grandma in a very brief mention: Lesser Glow Berry- "It feels like grandma's hands." So now we know.. it was that person she calls after... her dead old granny 4. And finally her shoes Probably an endearment term grannies use to refer to small children, specially girls... "porcelain doll" to indicate a very beautiful and "once-sweet" little girl So there you have it... old granny dead... Willow sad and miserable.. and now alone in an orphanage with people that clearly don't love her... You went dark with this one Klei.. Poor Willow T_T No wonder why is she was been chased by Shadow Creatures... and why she wen't kaboom...
  4. If you're in range of a flingomatic and willow starts a fire because she's insane, the flingomatic will extinguish the fire but you WON'T be able to build in the spot where the fire started. Can you please fix this or tell me a solution?
  5. I understand foremost that the intended mechanic was for Willow to only have 1 BERNIE! at a time, and as such the exploit allowing players to stack multiple large BERNIE!s was understandably patched out. However, I also am of the opinion that sometimes we learn more about the game through random chance, and to be quite frank the multiple BERNIE! exploit was actually really fun and made Willow interesting again, at least in my opinion. It's removal didn't make the game any more fun (which is what I look for in changes), it just made Willow worse. Which for a character who desperately needed this buff is quite the shame indeed. Some might say it's overpowered, which foremost is a difficult thing to nail down on exactly defining. However, I would argue that even a large BERNIE! army was less effective than a proper Wicker Tentacle trap. The screenshots of people (always conveniently in creative mode) with 50 BERNIE!s undercut the amount of resources it'd require to set up and maintain such an Army, in comparison to a tentacle trap that literally drops most of the materials (along with some nice weapons) required to craft it. Sure, Bernie isn't destroyed upon "death" but it will still take a substantial amount of time to gather any significant amount of BERNIE!s and then they have to be repaired when they fall in combat. It seemed like this update was designed to make Willow more summoner-like, which while I am not personally a fan of the idea I am willing to work with what I've been given. Perhaps a compromise would be best here, with either a server or Willow BERNIE! cap limit set so as to not flood servers. If they want to make her more summoner-like but limit her to a single summon this does seem to defeat the purpose of a "summoner" character, at least a stereotypical one. I'm interested to see what people's opinions are on this in the comments, primarily because I don't actually know if I share the majority opinion. Please keep things civil as always.
  6. I haven't posted in the forums for a looong time and I thought it'd be cool to share some of my works !! My tumblr is http://tantum-tenebris.tumblr.com/ and I'll sometimes post my work on there, too! I'm a big fan of Willow so most of my artwork's mostly about her. I also run a sideblog for Ember, the wyvernling from my ds rp group the Famine Friends: https://wyvernling.tumblr.com/. My steam's Shadowtime! this was a quick test w/ an old photograph theme !! and some doodles of Ember !! @Pink_Infatuation is gma :') spams over; stay tuned !!
  7. I love the gfx in the shop in game for the Ghastly Attic Chest and Willow Deluxe Wardrobe stuff. Is there a chance I can get my hands on some of the pretty gfx for background making and maybe overlay things? A kind of Willow Media Kit would be lovely! If not, I completely understand! PS. I especially want a pic of Ashley. Because love.
  8. Since you can always fix bernie when he reaches 0% durability, and you can only have one BERNIE! active at the time (without exploits), It whould be cool If you could start the game with the Bernie skin (if you have it, and it's active). Maybe do it for other characters and items suck as Wigfröid helmet and spear, willow's lighter and Max book/Wes ballons/Webber spider nest/Woodie Lucy/Wendy flower in case they get one skin in the future. Loved the Willow update. Keep up the good work Klei <3
  9. Are you ready for the upcoming fire apocalypse that is Willow? Bases will be burnt, Beefalos will run amok on fire. And most importantly, there will be Godzilla battles with Bernie.
  10. a Willow doodle for your Willow needs
  11. Since all the characters are getting reworked in some way, and willow seems to be next, I'm gonna spitball an idea of mine on how to make her both better and more unique, since that seems to be the goal of the reworks. Resistant to fire damage Immune to fire. First is her fire resistance, just make her immune again, the damage it does now is negligible, becoming more annoying than anything, and you really have to try to die to fire as Willow right now, so just make her immune again. plus you can utilize it in winter by burning things in your inventory to get some quick heat without being hurt, that would make you a walking forest fire however so caution is advised. Other players would be warmed by you however so the tactic has its uses. Can craft a sweet lighter... Next, only willow can use the lighter, much like other character specific items, also, make it infinite again. That's really it, she can still craft it and can still cook food with it, but all it really needs IMO is to be infinite again. ...and a cuddly bear. Bernie is fine I guess, maybe a bit expensive, but when willow has a low enough sanity to use it she is already freezing to death. So to indirectly buff Burnie I propose... Loses heat when insane Is a pyromaniac. Finally, her sanity mechanic. The freezing thing is, interesting, I guess, but the way it's handled is dumb, I suggest something much more in line with the whole maniac part of the pyromania. Like Woodie with his wood meter, Willow will have a fire meter, this will drain constantly, and will only raise when she is near enough fire to counter the drain rate. Holdin the lighter or torches will slow it down, but to raise it, you need to be near a bigger source of fire like a campfire or setting something else on fire, like a tree. While the meter is very high, you will passively gain a bit of sanity and she will gain insulation, allowing her to keep warm longer or heat up faster. If the meter fall too far down, then willow's body temperature will begin to drop and she will start losing sanity, both are based on how low it is. There would be some character prompts about her need for fire when it hits certain thresholds so players know whats happening. When it gets near 0 she will begin to take damage from the cold if the world temperature is like autumn's, if it's winter, then she will likely freeze much sooner than that. There is the consequence that in summer you can intentionally keep the meter down to stay cool without trouble, it makes sense that a pyro would have no trouble in summer so let's run with that. the fire meter is much more in line with her character and would be much more interesting to play with than just getting cold when your sanity is low. with sanity no longer being the deciding factor to when you freeze, you can be at high sanity and still cool in summer, thought your sanity will drain quite fast so be careful. But yeah, that's My idea for the rework, I really want to know what you all think about it, because there isn't enough serious discussion about it honestly.
  12. I like polls to get an idea of how people feel about changes to characters like Wheeler or Winona, so here's one for the Willow refresh.
  13. So, this forum is chaos at the moment, to the point where it's practically war against Pro-Immunity and Anti-Immunity. However, whenever I try and argue against someone who is Anti-Immunity, they don't really give a coherent counterargument, ever. So here I am, putting all of my reasons why we need Fire Immunity, along with popular counter-arguments and why they are not valid. Be prepared to see me be a little heated. (ha get it) Also, the post is segmented into spoiler tabs so they're easier to read. Perks Of Immunity: Fire Immunity Counter-Arguments, and why they are not valid: For those that want to argue in this thread, go ahead, in fact I encourage it, that is, if your argument actually has any merit to it. Also, stay on topic I guess. Also if you want to raise points, whether it is pro or anti immunity, I'll add them to this post.
  14. While the Willow rework needs, work. And everyone and their grandma and wickerbottoms say the fire immunity should be brought back entirely (Please) I feel there's one change we can add that will add alot to Willow. Not sure if it'd be OP or even programmable but: What if any fire damage done by Willow to enemies like through staves and darts doesn't burn or turn to ash if it's killed by said damage by Willow. Maybe to tell if it's fire from her it'd be a unique color? In turn it'd give people a reason to use the fire staff and darts that no one ever really uses. That or maybe using the staff she'd get less sanity drain? I dunno. I just thought she can be a good way to make a use out of the useless fire weapons. But I'm also not a programmer nor do I really understand balance perfectly so, apologies if this all sounds dumb
  15. Ok I know this is really soon out of the gate to be making a post but I need to get this off my chest. I'm pretty much entirely disappointed in the news in Willow's rebalance, and I want to explain why. As someone with about 1700 hours playing both Don't Starve Willow and Don't Starve Together Willow I have the authority (at least on some level) to appraise the rework. What I was hoping for was a rebalance that gave Willow that unique fire-based niche she has in Don't Starve, the niche which impacts all skill levels of players and all levels of the game (Willow has an absolutely incredible endgame in Don't Starve with Inventory Burning Arenas and FireFarms). This niche is what made her fun, what made her interesting to play, and it's also the same concept of a niche that makes the other characters interesting to play, for example Wolfgang excelling in combat, or Wortox excelling in team heals and teleportation. Something unique that makes them enjoyable to play. While others may disagree with me, I think there's no question that Willow's Fire Immunity coupled with her infinite lighter and Inventory burning gave her that incredible niche in Don't Starve (also improved firefarms) This is Don't Starve Willow in a nutshell: I don't even necessarily need this in DST (although it imo would be perfect) all I'm arguing is that it's what made her fun, which in my opinion is what should really matter at the end of the day. But instead of this fun unique niche we got this: Since it may not be obvious, especially to newcomers to the games why this isn't good, I'll break down each point and explain the issues I find with them, then wrap it up in explaining why these even combined don't help the issue. For the first point, sure I'm glad insanity freezing is gone, it was admittedly kinda useless. It even got nerfed to the point it couldn't actually freeze the player outside of winter, making it a completely nonexistent downside to begin with, so its removal is a good thing. For the second point, this harkens what is arguably the most serious problem with this rework, the fact that this downside will only impact newer players (not to mention it sounds like something a mod character would have tacked on for no reason, even if it is logical for Willow). The third point is identical to the second in that it'll literally only impact beginner players in any appreciable way, and also once again feels like something that would be thrown onto a mod character for no reason. The fourth perk: Why? Why no fire immunity? Why is that just too much to ask for? It's something I don't think I've ever heard someone say they have an issue with. Willow having fire immunity in no way increases griefing, and besides they shouldn't be balancing a character around griefing to begin with! The fifth perk: This no damage already was a thing, and was about as helpful as it sounds. Faster extinguish is absolutely useless unless you decided to run summer with no flingos for no reason. So this perk is a total wash. The fuel perk is negated because Maxwell exists, I'm sorry but it's true. When adding character perks it's important to consider whether or not another character already solves the problem (which isn't even a real problem except maybe to beginners). So this perk only maybe helps newer players. Bernie being equipped for Sanity and Warmth is cool and all but beefalo hats exist and Willow is a sanity tank thanks to her fire regen. I could see this perk maybe occasionally helping for very specific situations, overall not really game changing. The new Bernie perks do actually sound potentially interesting beyond that, and it's really telling that in my opinion the Bernie perks have the most potential out of all of this. And she keeps her previous perks, which honestly I'm completely neutral on, I'd be ok if they removed the cooking of the lighter at the cost of infinite durability, but that's another topic for another day? So what's the takeaway from all of this? The takeaway is that none of these perks actually make her anymore fun to play and don't help anyone besides maybe new players, they're just kind of a cobbled mess that appears to be thrown together. Whether or not that's actually true I have no idea, but certainly if Klei can make Wortox they can do better than this for Willow, this is what I'd expect from a mod character's perk list. I would rather she have less perks and a real downside granted the perks actually matter for once, and impact all skill levels of players and all levels of gameplay. I want that niche that makes her great in Don't Starve. I just want Willow to actually be decent again, to actually not get insulted and instabanned from servers for picking her, I've dealt with that for the past 3 years and I finally had some hope she'd be good again in this rework. However if this is what we're getting the reality is she'll be almost identical to her status now. As always please keep things civil in the comments. I'm not trying to direct any ill-will in this post. Addendum: Also there's a mouse cursor in her promo art
  16. Ria's Art Book

    Ok so I realized that a couple people actually like my DS comic: Wilson meets Red. So I decided to post it here with a couple other crossover art pieces. Comic page 1: Page 2 part 1: Page 2 part 2: Comic page 3: I personally love some of Red's expressions in the first two pages XD Here are a few others I did before/during the comic. Science Machine: Carrots: Wilson's Squirrel Problem: And lastly, comic page 4: --- Fanart showcase (I know I've already posted these in my off-topic art thread but I wanted to show them here and in the ONI thread too). These will be mostly focusing on DS OCs, character interactions and related art styles. Also sorry in advance if you guys see your old art and cringe ^^;
  17. On the topics of Willow’s rework, what do you think her new skin will be? From the screenshot we got in the update thread, I’m leaning towards the “orphan” skin.
  18. Let's Get this Straight, if you think that the Willow " Refresh " is good then you might wanna skip. https://steamcommunity.com/games/322330/announcements/detail/1628524688255214776 This rework gonna go unnoticeable. these minor changes won't " save Willows From Extinction " unless the Devs are hiding Fire Catapults up their sleeves. Literally nothing will change. but idk maybe experienced Willow Players will disagree. Willow no longer gets cold from low sanity. Can't Complain Willow takes more damage and loses sanity from freezing Gotta Burn em All Willow takes less damage from overheating. Cough Cough Fire Immunity Cough Cough Willow gets fire immunity for the first several seconds and then reduced damage thereafter. no i meant long term >:( Willow takes no burn damage while extinguishing fires and does it faster than others. Heal items exist, and most if not all the food items give enough HP to compensate that's damage taken to extinguish that Grass. Adding fuel to fires is more effective for Willow. BZATE,BZZY, **BOUNCE BOUNCE** Bernie can now be equipped by Willow for sanity and warmth at the cost of durability. Did someone say Tam o Chanter ? Bernie grows big and will taunt and fight most hostile creatures when Willow is nearby and insane. Can't Complain about this one, will surely save some durability of my Weapons. We found that our schedule was just too demanding and we want to be able to make things interesting and not just pump out stuff as fast as we can. i like the sound of that. Recommendation : i will mostly leave it for Willow Players as i am not that of a willow player, i have tried her for 10-12 hours but i think i dont have much experience yet to judge. but, a wider range lighter would be great and an ability for willow to light mobs on fire by hand. had to get this off my chest badly, cause i wont lie, Willow was probably the most rework i was excited about, hey at least she's is better than Wes Now.
  19. First off, I'm not a game developer nor a pro player by any means, and my idea here is not to balance, but rather an idea how to make Willow interesting and helpful to the team. Let's look at the last two characters added to DST: Winona - is able to build catapults and generators that allow her to take down waves of enemies - helpful both to the team and to herself. Wortox - a fighter that needs to eat souls that allow him to teleport and heal himself and others - helpful both to the team and himself. Now the one from Hamlet beta branch: Wheeler - 5 fewer slots in her inventory, but is able to track down items + ranged attacks Wagstaff - punishes for not prepared food, sees badly, makes a very good wood harvester - understandable why he's not in DST The thing is, I believe, a character in DST should be both powerful alone and in terms of cooperation with others. Now, even with the rework, Willow is still not helpful to the team, besides Bernie, but it's still not needed when you have a football helmet + wooden armour, which is fairly easy to get Here are my ideas: Lighter: -Is infinite in terms of giving light to prevent from Charlie -Takes a small percent (maybe like 0.5%) every item set on fire -Takes a larger percent for making a dwarf star-like orb that lasts about 1.5-2 days, warms, cooks and scares off monsters -When reaches 0% is not broken, but needs to be refilled with nightmare fuel The reason to make it refuelable with nightmare fuel comes from the idea of Bernie being a target dummy for nightmares, which if taken advantage of, could result in big numbers of nightmare fuel. Willow herself: -FULL. FIRE. RESISTANCE. -deals 25% more damage with fire-themed weapons -"Fire meter" that works similarly to Woodie's Log Meter, which means it lowers over time and needs to be refilled by setting things on fire.
  20. So, with the new Willow coming up I was thinking about the potential tricks that could be done with her new-ish set of abilities. However since the information is pretty vague this is nothing more than speculation. Currently a fun strategy (not really efficient right now but..) that utilizes Bernie is to use all the insanity inducing items alongside several Bernies to fight bosses. Nightmare armor, night sword, blue caps, bat bat, and some others. If Bernie is actually capable of fighting there are interesting possibilities of creating Bernie armies to fight bosses as well as more effectively using the "Go Nuts" items/weapons. My hope for Bernie's buff is that he will make it feasibly possible to fight bosses totally insane without an annoying amount of preparation beforehand effectively giving Willow easy access to insanity inducing items with little need to prepare for the penalty of being insane. Not to mention if Bernie is strong then being able to drop a bodyguard at will is also pretty interesting concept to play with. Bernie also has the potential for being an EXTREMELY effective nightmare fuel farmer if Bernie is actually strong. Especially if there is a small army of Bernies. Equip a nightmare amulet, bone helmet, or just plain go insane and have Bernie knock them all out while you tend to other matters. IF Bernie is strong then Willow may have taken the slot for the most efficient nightmare fuel farmer. The only other two characters that have an innate ability to gather nightmare fuel faster are Wolfgang and Wigfrid since they can kill them easier and even then they have to dedicate their focus on farming fuel. (Maxwell/Wes don't count since it's easy to set up an insanity farm and they don't have any innate ability to kill them faster) Another interesting possibility is that according to the teaser for reworked Willow Bernie can now be equipped for sanity and warmth. Unless JoeW actually meant insulation this means that Willow could have a portable personal heater allowing extremely easy winter travel on the surface as well as easier winter spelunking. If the player has the hindsight to use Bernie for heat in the Winter that means that it will be unnecessary to carry around fire making supplies freeing up a couple slots of inventory space and being oh so very convenient. Mind you I may be reading into things but to me that's what I understood from the post. Again, speculation since we can't play her yet. So, overall it appears that the general niceties that are added to Willow will make her oriented towards new players while Bernie seems to be the gateway for experienced players to utilize insanity for more late game friendly use. TLDR; If Bernie is strong then Willow could potentially the best nightmare fuel farmer, efficient winter/summer explorer, and have easy access to insanity inducing items. If anyone thinks of any more interesting possibilities with her new abilities please share. I'm definitely excited to play her because regardless of what people think she's definitely being buffed from her current state.
  21. With everyone's favorite pyromaniac confirmed to be next in line for a character refresh, I'd like to hear what everyone would like to see with the new and (hopefully) improved Willow! Here are a few things that have been on my mind as of late. I have no idea if they're any good or not, I'm far from an expert on this game. I do love brainstorming though, so I'd love to hear some other people's ideas! Bring back fire immunity: Pretty straightforward, I think that this is probably the one thing that I've seen everyone agree on. Immunity to overheating: I think I once heard that this was something that was originally intended for Willow, but it was a while ago so I don't remember the details. I'm not sure if it'd be too strong or not, but I hope that Klei has at least considered it at some point. Plus from a lore stand point, it's awfully weird that she'd be immune or resistant to fire but not especially hot weather. Lighter buffs: As of right now, Willow's lighter is mostly just a longer lasting free torch that's not really worth keeping around or crafting again once lanterns are available, right? Being her signature item, I'm really hoping that the lighter will receive some upgrades. One way we could do this would be to simply bring back the infinite durability, and I think that would certainly be a step in the right direction. I don't think that it'd be too strong if the radius could be increased to match that of a torch either. One idea that I came up with would be that her lighter could have a durability, but it would gradually "refuel" itself when not in use. If that were the case, what if her lighter was given the ability to simply create a fire anywhere similar to the ones that spawn when red hounds are kill. These flames could burn for about a minute or so and It would use up some durability, like around 15-20%, so you wouldn't be able to simply spam fires all the time. I was thinking that this way, her lighter could function as a sort of pseudo-lantern of sorts. Oh and something like this were to be implemented, she would probably lose the ability to craft multiple lighters to be given to other players. Oh, and please keep the ability to cook food with it, I really like that feature for some reason ha ha. Control over how her fires spread: This is something I shared in the suggestions and feedback section but I heard that not very many people go there? I hope no one minds me sharing it again but I came up with the idea that any fires started by a Willow wouldn't actually spread on their own. Instead, any objects within spreadable distance while the fire is still burning would show a "spread" prompt when you hover the cursor over them, causing that object to immediately combust, the new fire following the same burning rules. This would extend to mobs set on fire by a Willow, and if they would die to the flames their loot wouldn't turn to ashes. Willow would only have control over fires started be her though, any other fire would behave normally. I was thinking that this way, Willow can take advantage of all kinds of fire related shenanigans without the massive risk of collateral damage, like making the fire darts and fire staff safer to use. As for exactly how she's able to do this, well the best explanation that I can come up with is that she has so much experience starting fires that she knows how to light them in such a way that she can predict how and where it spreads. That or pyrokinesis, that one's a popular theory right? Bernie: Actually, I didn't have anything in mind for the teddy bear. Considering he was only added as compensation for her original nerfs, I honestly don't think I'd mind it too much if they just removed him in favor of other useful fire related perks. (Though at the same time that would feel like a bit of a shame wouldn't it?) Downsides: I don't have anything in mind for this either. Isn't it generally agreed that no one really likes Willow's current downside of freezing when insane outside of using it to help survive summer though?
  22. So I've taken some time to enjoy the recent updates we've been getting with both the new character, Wortox, as well as Winona. However, there has been one thing that's been on my mind since the updates began which has bothered me, something which progressively is a growing concern. That thing is... Moon Rock Idols. No seriously, hear me out on this one. To clarify, the majority of Winona's buff (to my understanding) is construed in a massive buff to her item/structure creation. I understand that there are perks around her character itself, however for the sake of this we'll be focusing primarily on her new structures, as well as the one issue I've noticed developing in relation to the usage of moon rock idols. After the calming down of her hype, a significant portion of players I encountered have started using her solely to build her structures and then immediately switch back to their (usually) meta characters, making her "buff" really more a buff to the farms which can be used by any character (ironically buffing the meta even more). She became what I half-jokingly like to call a "swap" character, which is a term I coined for a character who's only useful for their items/structures, but isn't actually played because they're still not Wolfgang or Wickerbottom. While I agree that being a "swap" character is better than not being played at all I don't think it's necessarily the game design DST should have, at least in my opinion. Characters should be buffed so that they're played, not used merely as construction tools for another, more powerful character. This issue stems from moonrock idols themselves, which degrade the importance of character choice as a whole (you can be anyone on essentially a whim with no realistic limits) however the purpose of this discussion isn't really so much about these items themselves (although they need some sort of fix in my opinion) as it is the upcoming rebalance for this month: Willow. Now why would I be concerned about this? Because Bernie and the lighter both exist, and the same concept can be applied to them. Make no mistake, buffing a character's items as opposed to the character themselves is not by any means a bad thing, it's still a buff, however it's also indirectly a buff to everyone else in addition, which is arguably not the intention of "character-specific" items. To sum up what I'm saying is I'm concerned with the rebalance Klei is going to use up a lot of their assets working on Bernie instead of working on Willow as a character herself, which is going to realistically have one of two outcomes. Either Bernie will be useful enough to matter, resulting in people swapping to Willow solely to craft him and then swapping back (similar to Winona now) or he's still not going to matter, either of which at it's core isn't a good thing. I find it extremely unlikely that the buff if focused heavily on Willow's items will garner enough for people to be interested in actually playing her so much as it will cause people to just have yet another set of tools to acquire when they switch characters. There's multiple solutions to this issue, and I'm completely aware it may not be an issue at all in practice, as Klei may focus solely on Willow herself for the rebalance (we obviously have no idea). Foremost, (unfortunately) nerfing moonrock idols in some way may be a solution. Since I'm not a fan of nerfing stuff (it usually makes the game less fun) I'm not exactly thrilled at this thought, however perhaps a tentative cooldown could be considered as a simple solution that doesn't ruin their purpose and yet makes them not spammable (making character choice at least slightly more important as a result). Another solution is if the future rebalances focus solely on the characters themselves moreso over their items/structures. Obviously Winona is a fringe case where her items and structures being her main thing is thematically appropriate, however future character reworks should be more focused on the character over their items (unless their items are genuinely character specific, ie can't be transferred and used by another). Honestly I'm probably just paranoid and this may not even end up being an issue, and I recognize that. I just want Klei to focus more on the characters themselves and consider the implications of buffing character items when moonrock idols exist and are relatively easily to acquire/use. TL;DR I don't want the primary direction Klei takes with reworking Willow to go towards buffing her items, specifically Bernie, which would encourage her to become an item "swap" character. I think the focus should be on mechanically buffing Willow herself before attempting to buff the items is considered.
