Yup, I'm certain of it, although thinking about it there were other steps involved. I clicked a couple of times, dropped the new backpack, picked it up, then put it over the original. Then, when I picked up the new backpack that I had just equipped, the original backpack was nowhere to be seen. I was in the middle of a field with nothing left growing, so I didn't have anywhere to lose it.

Essentially it seems that there's a bug where if you create a second backpack and put it on top of the first, it wipes out everything in your original pack. So, so sad....
