When running by a killer bee hive (or disturbing bee hives while bees are red) I've experienced the normal "run for your life" from the bees, but then instead of going back into their hive once they lose interest, they huddle together a safe distance away, not landing or doing anything else really. I've walked by them, and nothing will happen. But if you attack them, they will start chasing you again.
The picture I've included shows my partner and I camping and the bees just hovering a safe distance away. They stayed there until we attacked them again.
