bird whistle, dead but alive

whilst I was playing hamlet, I crafted and used a bird whistle and used it. I accidentally got crushed by the birds foot once it spawned. After this happened, the "you are dead" screen was shown and I saw the bird inch towards my players dead body and pick it up to which it went to the island with my character. Once I was in a nest, I gained control of my character again but that was it. I couldn't do much except move around. It may be because I had some mods in use but I am not sure.
