So i was playing with a friend the deerclops spawned and while i was fighting it i went insane, so i lured it over to a herd of beefalo to distract it.
The deerclops used its laser on the herd of beefalo and although a few of them were hurt by the laser none of them (including the beefalo that were hit) actually ran towards the deerclops, they just stood still as if they hadn't been hit.
The deerclops used its normal ice attack after hitting the beefalo with the laser one more time and then they all ran towards the deerclops and started attacking.
Later on i used console commands to spawn some beefalo and a deerclops and every time the deerclops used its laser attack on the beefalo none of them would aggro to it.
