Wickerbottom can only craft her On Tentacles book next to an actual alchemy engine, even though the book's crafting says "Use a science machine to build a prototype," as well as the fact that Wickerbottom's perk is that she has access to the alchemy engine when standing next to a plain old science machine.

1) Stand next to a science machine as Wickerbottom with On Tentacles materials to see that you CAN'T make it. 2) Move next to an alchemy engine to see that you can now make it
