what floats and why?

It seems Canes dont float while axe and spear does. Even dubloons float... I am not saying things should float as they do in real life. I just want to know whether there is a list of floatable items, and how it is decided.

Put together this list real quick, if it is not on this list there is a 99.999% chance it will sink as of v171841

I saw in your list items such as twigs, silk, rope and backpack. I did see these items float. So, does it take a while before an item actually sinks into the ocean, instead of simply sinking upon touching the surface?

It should be relatively easy to make a mod that forces every inventory item to float. The force-floating items would not have a float animation though (no ripples) and items meant to sick would have to be specifically excluded.

No, as far as I can see, items either sink or float. There is no such thing as floating for a while. The list is for floating items, not sinking ones.

So, a list for sinking items would be more useful, I guess, since most items float.

Okay I put together a list of items that DO NOT float... (well 99% chance it will not float, chesters eyebone sinks and then magically spawns in the water on top of you for example)

WTH is deadlyfeast and devtools? Also, boats dont float!?

I will need to do further testing to find out if boats float. It may be that they are hovering 1 centimeter above the water. Or that they have giant peg feet underneath walking on the bottom of the ocean. Start your favorite savegame and hit the ~ key on your keyboard type c_give("deadlyfeast") and then press ctrl+L to get rid of the annoying text then enjoy the most delicious meal you ever tasted.
