Does that suggest skins for the Mushroomlight and the Lantern or am I spouting nonsense here?

Well, yeah. When the Telltale Heart's skin function was added, an update later we got a Telltale Heart skin.

So we may get some new Lantern design next update.

(Idk if this is new or old)

I remember someone bringing up the compatibility for lantern skins. They might have mentioned the Mushroomlight as well, but I don't recall.
