Random crash on world generation

After buying and installing the SW dlc today, I played for a little bit.

Then I wanted to play the RoG version with mods, so I downloaded some from the workshop.

Now attempting to launch or create any world results in the game crashing w/o any message, even when no mods are activated.

The game was working fine before, and no usual solutions (verification, compatibility etc) have helped.

Doesn't seem to be a way to edit my post, so here's a little detail from the log.

The game says it doesn't have enough memory. My system has 16 GBs, and only 20% was in use by other applications, so it had access to at least 10. Pretty sure this isn't supposed to happen.

After manually deleting all mod files and verifying game cache (1 file reacquired), the game works.

Could there be a problem with unsubscribing mods not getting fully deleted, perhaps?

Going to try activating some mods again now.

Okay, so downloading ANY mods from Steam Workshop and NOT enabling them causes the game to become non-functional.

This happens regardless of actually USING the mods, or having the Shipwrecked DLC installed or not.

Possible fixes?

Okay, so apparently the issue is with Steam Workshop itself. Adding the mod files manually doesn't cause any issues.

But using Steam Workshop apparently has a memory leak problem, or some other kind of run-time error.

EDIT: Nope, I take that back. Steam Workshop seems to be very eager to cause crashes for some reason, but at some point the game still randomly starts crashing, even with all mods disabled.

EDIT2: Okay, so maybe I'm an idiot and this is written somewhere, but having more than 60 mods crashes the game upon world generation (and possibly loading). Yes, 60 mods work, 61 crashes 100% of the time. Also, it doesn't matter if you have huge mods in the folder (like Hero In The Dark) or tiny ones (like boomerang auto-catching). Only their total amount seems to matter.

However, having 60 (or close to) mods sometimes causes the game to crash on world loading (not generation) with an error relating to Map Drawing (or something, don't quite remember). This crash happens at random though.
