Rapidly Decreasing Framerate Once Sanity below 100

Hi everyone.

 

I purchased the STEAM version of Don't Starve, and have had no major issues until my sanity dropped below 101.

 

The frame rate increasingly slows down over a short period of time.

There is also a sign that the sound has become distorted and has excessive reverb / echo.

 

The framerate finally makes the game unplayable and it takes minutes, to be able to exit the game, back to the main menu.

 

Once at the main menu, the framerate is back to normal.

 

On re-entering the game. The framerate starts to degrade again.

 

I have no mods, (just the Giants DLC, which is disabled at present).

I have all the graphical effects disabled.

 

 

The problem only occurs once insanity effects kick in.

 

 

My machine is old, (read ancient) :-)

 

 

OS Win XP Home. SP 3

 

Pentium 4 2.66 ghz

2.75 gigs Ram

 

Nvidia 7600gs 256mb Graphics. AGP

Soundblaster Audigy.

 

Unfortunately, both Nvidea and Soundblaster drivers are no longer updated by their respective companies. :(

 

I am aware that there are other users who have had the same issue, in 2013, (did a Google search), but I cannot find appropriate threads on this site.

 

I suspect that there is an issue with the soundcard drivers, rather with the graphics.

I am also surprised that no one seems to emphasise updating sound drivers, and appear to blame slow frame rate on graphics cards only.

 

 

If I can't resolve this issue, due to out of date drivers, then there is not much I can do until I upgrade.

 

On the other hand, I cannot understand why Don't starve, can work fine in all other areas, except when the character is going nutty? I also suspect that my older tech, is highlighting a "bottleneck", in the program code, that may not be as noticeable on higher end machines?

Well. This is more than a bit disappointing.

 

I waited a good few days for at least a basic response from Klei, and.... Nothing. :-/

 

 

Ho. Hum. At least I can play the game if I keep my character sane.

 

I Back a lot of Indie devs, including Trese Brothers Games, Fractalsoftworks and HalfGeek. Always had some form of good response, especially with TB..

We do apologize for the delay - checking your specs, we found that your graphics card is below the game's system requirements to run properly. However, here are a few steps you can try that can improve performance albeit at a lower graphical setting.

 

1) Enable Netbook Mode and Small Textures (Main Menu > Options > Settings)

 

2) Lower the game's screen resolution.

 

3) Disable Bloom and Distortion

Thank you for your answer. I seriously need to upgrade this year. I can't see why the minimalistic graphics used by the game can cause such framerate degradation, but I suspect a newer card would also have updated graphics instructions as well as more processing speed.

 

Time to let the moths out of my billfold then. :D
