Steam's Don't Starve won't launch

Okay, so I've had this problem for a while now, but I've overlooked it because I've had ways of getting around it.  With the release of the Don't Starve Together Beta on Steam however, this is no longer the case.

 

Okay, so about a year ago, something started causing my Don't Starve game to just not launch.  At all.  Normally, when launching a game, Steam displays a notification like "Preparing to launch Don't Starve...", but that doesn't even come up at all.  My Steam status would say that I was in the game for about 5 seconds, and then revert to "online" status.  Instead of trying to fix this, I just downloaded the stand-alone version of the game and used that.  Problem solved, right?

 

Well, Don't Starve Together is here now, and I can't use it with the stand-alone version yet, so I'd like to know how to fix my Steam copy.  I've deleted all of my original files, downloaded new files, and verified the integrity of the game cache.  I have 0 mods installed right now, and I'm still having the same problem.

 

Here's a list of the important stuff:

 

- My game doesn't just crash, it physically won't launch

 

- I've deleted my old files and redownloaded

 

- I've verified the integrity of the game's cache

 

- The stand-alone Don't Starve game works (even with RoG DLC)

 

- I'm using no mods whatsoever

 

If I could please get some help with this, I would really appreciate it.  DST is just staring me in the face right now, and I have no way to use it.

Well, this worked for my friend. He had exactly the same 'symptoms' I guess.

What fixed it was going to the Steam folder for Don't Starve/Don't Starve Together (he had this problem for both), which is normally "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Don't Starve Together Beta", then going into the "bin" folder and going into the Properties of dontstarve_steam.exe.

From there, set the compatibility to Windows XP (service pack 3).

I know that sounded like my friend was on an XP machine, but he wasn't, so I hope this works for you :-)

May I ask what your system specs are?

 

Can you post the contents of your log.txt file from your "documents\klei\donotstarve\" folder after the "preparing to launch" occurs?

Also, I noticed that my log.txt hasn't updated since I launched Don't Starve through Steam.  It's only kept track of my non-Steam version, which DOES contain mods (and mods in progress).

Do you think having 2 different versions installed is screwing around with something, possibly?  I really don't want to have to delete my non-Steam game to find out until I know for sure that the Steam version can work.

Sorry for my bad English. I have the same bug. I get megapack of a game with a version, that i can present to my friend. He had no problems with this and can play the game, but i have the same problems as a topicstarter. One exeption! I can't run all the launchers (don't strave and don't strave thogether. I think we have the same problem, so i hope you'll fix it. 

My system specs are very close to TS

I have no documents\klei\donotstarve\log.txt

I have no documents\klei at all( 

This file must be in my userprofile\documents?

Same problem for me. 

I got the game on steam, installed it but it just won't launch. As it has been mentionned, the steam popup shows to tell me the game prepares to launch and then absolutely nothing happens. 

 

I reinstalled some files, did the setting of my Nvidia, checked the integrity of the files, reinstalled the game and just nothing. A little help would be appreciated.

I got the same problem, the "Preparing to launch..." windows appears for a few seconds, then disappears and nothing more happens. I've tried the solutions I've seen in this forum and Steam forums, but it's not solved yet. 

I've never used a mod, nor the DLC. And I succedeed to play a few months ago, I don't remember the date accurately.

This morning I tried the standalone version of the game and it worked out perfectly, or at least I didn't notice nothing going wrong. I guess that the problem is with the Steam version of the game. Here is may log now, in case it helps:

I have the same issue for both Don't Starve and Don't Starve together. I've tried all the solutions suggested here and on Steam. The game never created a log for me (nothing under Klei in my documents).

Hey kladeos, I'm experiencing the exact same situation. The only way I fixed it was by using the integrated chip instead of the nVidia gpu. I haven't really tried playing Don't Starve while using the integrated chip, does the game perform the same? I remember experiencing some fps issues when I first tried using an integrated chip when the game first came out.

Nevermind, I fixed it by changing my Nvidia settings for the game to integrated.

 

Can you please tell how to do this?  I've looked through my NVidia settings for a good 30 minutes and found nothing.

When you go to the nVidia Control Panel, in the 3D settings section, select the "Manage 3D settings" option. Next, go to the "Program Settings" tab and click on "Add" to add the Don't Starve executable to the list (in case it isn't there already). Once you have the Don' Starve executable selected, choose the integrated chip option from the drop down menu.

I've followed all of your instructions, but for some reason, it physically won't allow me to select either Don't Starve OR Don't Starve Together to add to my list of programs.  Any idea why?

Where are you selecting the executable from? If you try to use it from the desktop shortcut it will not work. The absolute path for the actual executable on Steam is:

 

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\dont_starve\bin/dontstarve_steam.exe

 

Considering that you installed steam on your C drive of course.

Are you sure it was running the game with the integrated chip? So far NONE of the other solutions worked for me. But running the game with the integrated chip fixed it. If that doesn't work for you then it's a whole new issue.

There you go! Sorry but i wasn't able to find the way to add a screenshot. It's in Spanish but I circled the relevant data and I think it's pretty understandable. It would be that my integrated chipset it´s not enough to play Don't Starve or, as you are saying, it's just a new issue.

i don't know spain, but after this you must confirm your choise (scroll the menu down) + you must update you video drivers. if the game still crash - try to go: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Don't Starve Together Beta\bin

than run settings on your exe file of he game, there chose compatibility (i have russian version, so i don't know, how it is named in eng version, but the sense is understandable) and add a note on "run as administrator" (still don't know exactly how it is named). after that try to run the game.
