Spazmatic
This may be a binary code, but Kevin used e.g. &/ for 0 and *$ for 1. Converted the symbols to binary code, and another message appeared in binary code, converted that code in text and it says:Be sure to drink your Ovaltine. pacovf
I'd believe that it's hexadecimal: every pair of symbols ($, &, *, /) makes a hexadecimal number, which could be converted to letters via, say, ASCII. Which leaves us with 24 possibilities (the number represented by each symbol). If I had the time, I could code a small decoder, but meh.How did you do it, Spazmatic?A cursory Google search tells that this might be a reference to "Little Orphan Annie", or "A christmas story". Beats me.

I'm not someone who's experienced at decoding or anything, so forgive my ignorance. spoiled for space (very large rambling post)Every "/" is separated by a "*" on either side, which implies to me perhaps that "/" separates words and "*" separates letters. That would mean the letters themselves must be represented by different combinations of "&" and "$". The only one-character "word" I'm seeing anywhere in that code snippet is "&$", and it's quite common. It could be either "I" or "a", however since the paragraph ends with "&$", it could also very likely be punctuation, a period. Which would mean that neither the word "I" or the word "a" appear anywhere, which sucks because that'd be a good starting point. I'm still assuming this is a simple substitution code (and not something more complicated, or gibberish). Though wait, now I'm noticing that "&$" also appears within some words, making it not a period. What character could appear both at the end of a sentence and in the middle of a word? I'm beginning to think my entire approach is flawed here, I've probably made some wrong assumptions.Let's move on, though, because I'm not ready to give up yet. I'll look for some two-letter "words". I'm seeing "$&*&$" and "&&&*&" and "$&$$*&&&" and "$&$$*&&&". Hey, a repeated word, that's a good sign! What's a common two-letter word, that ends with a letter that begins another two-letter word? My first thought is "to", since it's very common, and some two-letter words start with "o". So "&&&" might be the letter "o", "$&$$" might be the letter "t", and "&&&*&" might be the word "of", "on" or "or" (probably not oh or ow or ox).I'm making a lot of leaps-of-faith here -- I'm not taking this that seriously. So why not forge ahead and look at some three-letter words. I'm hoping we'll find the letters "&&&" or "$&$$" in them, for clues. "$&*&$*$&$&" and "&$$*&&&*&&$&" are one-after-another. "&&$*$*$&" shows up three times, and there's also "$&$*$*$$$$". Wait -- every time "&&$*$*$&" shows up, it's before the word "&$". That's interesting. I'm now guessing that Kevin's saying something silly, and is cut off in the middle of a sentence, meaning that "&$" can in fact be "a". I've made it this far on wild guesses, so here's a new one: the last half of the code is going "and a [something] and a [something] and a" then cuts off.So let's summarize what I've guessed so far, and see if it makes any sense. "&&&" = "o", "$&$$" = "t", " "&$" = "a", "&&$" = oh wait, I'm dumb, "and" can't be "&&$*$*$&" if "a" is "&$". Let's assume I'm right about "a" and wrong about "and", and see if any of the other three-letter words make any sense. Two words next to each other are "$&*&$*$&$&*/*&$$*&&&*&&$&". Translating what I know, that's "_a_ _o_". Not too helpful.Hold up, I should probably get smarter about this. Maybe it's just binary? Nope, no good. "$$", "&$$" and "$&$$" are all separate letters, which couldn't be the case if either & or $ stood for binary zero. (I'm pronouncing these in my head like SS, ASS and SASS.) Moving on!Actually, I'm gonna post this now, and keep going in another post. Always save your work! This is fun so far. Ditocoaf
Alright, moving on.What if "&$" is actually "I", so "&&$*$*$&" could be "and", and so the second half is going "and I [something] and I [something] and I"? Let's see if that gets me anywhere. Should be easy to tell if this assumption is wrong, since it gives me four whole letters. That would make it: "&&&" = "o", "$&$$" = "t", " "&$" = "I", "&&$" = a, "$" = n, "$&" = d.$&*&$ = di&&&*&" = o_$&$$*&&& = to$&*&$*$&$&*/*&$$*&&&*&&$& = di_ _o_$&$*$*$$$$ = _n_Wait, hold up. The first one. "di" isn't a word. Crap, I'm wrong again. I'm having trouble seeing what "&&$*$*$& */* &$" could possibly mean. It's repeated three times, each time is the only instance of both "&&$*$*$&" and "&$". "&$" also appears in lots of other words, including "$&*&$", which makes it really weird that it ends the whole paragraph. The only one-letter words are "I" and "a", and there aren't very many two-letter words that end in "i" or "a"!The more I work on this, the more sure I am that I'm on the right track (there's too much of a pattern for this to be random gibberish), but I just don't know what I'm doing. I'm sure there's some sort of technique I could use to solve this, if I knew it.I'm gonna take a break for a while, and come back to this fresh. In the meantime, maybe someone else will have more luck, learning from my mistakes? Edited December 16, 2012 by Ditocoaf

Luna Lovecraft
These combinations can't stand for letters, or at least not all of them.Observe:&$&$&$*&$&$&$*&$&$&$*&&&*$$&*That is three of the same letter three times in a row. There are no words in the English dictionary that work like that. That leads me to believe that &$&$&$ is either a multi-letter combination or something else entirely. Ditocoaf
Ooh, good catch. Yeah, unless the message contains some misspelled words or nonwords, it looks like my original assumption ("/" separates words and "*" separates letters) is at least partially wrong. And if there are nonwords, then it'd be nearly impossible to decode using this sort of logic.Well, that leaves me stumped for now. I'll sleep on it. toejam
Maybe Kevin will take pity and just reveal the message"phrase" occurrences:$ - 20&$ - 17$&$ - 14$$ - 12$$$ - 11& - 10$& - 10&$&$&$ - 9$&&$ - 8&&$ - 6$$$$ - 6&&& - 5&&$& - 5$$8 - 5$&& - 4&& - 4&$$$ - 3$$$& - 3$&$$ - 3$&$& - 2&$$ - 2&$&$& - 1&$$$$& - 1$$&$ - 1&&&$ - 1Color coded: and */* removed:[ATTACH=CONFIG]901[/ATTACH]well that was fun XDEDIT: My thought is that these 25 different combinations do actually represent letters(it is far too much like the English alphabet for me to deny) So perhaps if we can break down what these phrases mean into letters, then we can take those letters and substitute them for the real words. Or i'm heading in the complete opposite direction. Edited December 16, 2012 by toejam

No idea. Also, you can tell where that spazmatic guy got his answer. http://www.roubaixinteractive.com/PlayGround/Binary_Conversion/Binary_To_Text.aspThe special message at the bottom. That's not exactly what I meant, if that's what you were trying to do; I meant that each symbol represents a number (0, 1, 10, or 11, in binary; thus, 24 possibilities), and that you could transform that into text via a common encoding, such as ASCII. But the fact that there are never two "/" or two "*" in a row makes me believe I was wrong anyway...
Sarph
What if he is trolling? Or not?! Wait a minute! Eureka! We are all losing our sanity trying to decode Kevin's wall of random characters, so that must mean only 1 thing! The sanity meter is coming! That makes perfect sense. That is really brilliant! archblue1206
i dont think these combinations represent letters of the alphabet,it is very weird to find almost all letters of the alphabet in a phrase..and if i'm wrong, i wonder what word is this? "*&$&$&$*&$&$&$*&$&$&$*&&&*$$&*"? there are certain words with 3 consecutive same letters but i can't find a word that starts with 3 consecutive same letters!and if the slashes represent separation of words, then "&$" is a vowel since its used as a single word, the only possibilities of these combination would either an "A" or an "I"but then comes this combination "$& &$" assuming this is a two letter word, and "&$" would be either an "A" or an "I",what word would it be???and the end of the phrase is "&$", Edited December 16, 2012 by archblue1206

Guest Dandytard
Well, That revealed completely nothing, Critter. That's like freezing a cup of water, then letting it turn back to liquid on a hot summers day. Although the exploration is appreciated, Keep tryin' to crack the code.In my opinion I think Kevin was just trolling, And the code doesn't mean anything at all.
