Will there be anything more for Puzzles/Backstory after Intermission?

Hello there!

Once again, this isn't as much my topic as it is something that keeps being brought up elsewhere by others (except in the forum threads) so I thought I'd give a voice to it and ask.

For those not in the know, Don't Starve's Klei had been giving us puzzles in their game trailers. Many puzzle threads from each update trailer ensured, and those who solved it even got nifty forum titles! The second to last puzzle thread left us post-earthquake and with this scene (the last puzzle was a panel that introduced Don't Starve Together which I missed while I was on hiatus.)

So what has been asked semi-whispered (and not answered in the Reddit AMA :( ) is:

Is this is it for the DS puzzles/backstories (DST being the last one) or will there be more puzzles/stories once solved done later by Klei?

I'd like to see a little more content giving us some subtle yet conclusive information on each character. We've gotten decent hints of where certain characters come from, and not everyone needs a page-long origin story, but there's a lot left that could be explored, and some characters just have so very little known about them to this day.

I also had a question that never got answered in the Reddit AMA regarding WX-78's origin and the significance of the Voxola Radio company, probably because it's such a minor, insignificant piece of the lore that probably hasn't been expanded since it was first mentioned... But just maybe, there might be a connection between the two, or I like to think there could be. Likely not, but as an automaton (or potentially guy in a robot suit, that theory has been thrown around as well) and without many alternative sources for such a strangely advanced technological creation in the lore, I like to think there must be some parallels between WX, Robert Wagstaff, Voxola and the fire that burnt down the factory.

Presently it's just up to our own interpretation of where a lot of the characters might come from, but I wouldn't mind having some solid, canon material created through a new ARG or at least some interesting, revealing character quotes when we examine others in Don't Starve Together.

Oh, and for those unfamiliar with the whole Voxola Radio company spiel, the radio in question (Wilson's Voxola PR-76) is seen here:

28TuIlI.gif

As well as in-game as part of the Divining Rod. Background on the radio's origins (with a quote from Kevin) can be read up on here on its Don't Starve wiki page.

I want to know a little more about Robert Wagstaff and what caused the fire that burnt down the factory that produced the model PR-76. Since Maxwell communicates to Wilson through said radio, I wonder if he had some involvement with the fire, and if some of the other characters might've owned the PR-76 as well.

And if you'll excuse me while I strap my tin foil hat on even tighter, WE HAVE THE PR-76, AND WX'S MODEL NUMBER IS 78, SO WHAT COULD 77 BE?

I wrote some lore for that a while back...

The radio is a Voxola PR-76, manufactured in 1919 by the Voxola Radio company of Sidney, Ohio. The radio offered revolutionary sound and reception quality for the time, and was promoted by an intense national marketing campaign. Very few units were actually produced, because the factory was destroyed in a fire only days after production began. Voxola founder Robert Wagstaff went missing the night of the fire, and the company declared bankruptcy soon thereafter.

... and that's official canon because I'm allowed to make it up on the fly! Mwa ha ha!

From Klei dev Kevin. Probably doesn't count for much since he says he made it up on the fly but dang it I want these things to be connected somehow!

I suspect a lot of Klei's creative output is going to be poured into Invisible, Inc. from now on, but I can't help but hope that somewhere down the line we'll get a surprise second DLC that throws in some new content without altering the game too intensely. I've yet to forget the name George T. Witherstone, and I often still romanticize the idea of a playable Thulecian being brought back from the dead.

There have been meetings.

They were long.

You will not be disappointed.

But you will have to be patient :)

In the meantime, there will be a preview poster for Invisible Inc coming out today which drops some cyberpunk lore bombs. Keep your eyes peeled for surprises!

Theory Time:

Here is my theory regarding the origin of all DS characters.

Maxwell and Wilson we know the most about thanks to William Carter puzzles and the Forbidden Knowledge video.  The William Carter Puzzles lead us to believe that Maxwell discovered the Codex Umbra after a train crash with the circus, and also that Wolfgang disappeared in that same train crash (I would assume that Wes and Wigfrid were part of the circus as well).  Which means they all entered the DS universe (I guess through some natural phenomenon at the point of the crash in the dessert, or found a door wondering in lost in the desert after the crash), however, Maxwell managed to escape with the Codex Umbra.  Using the Codex Umbra Maxwell becomes a successful magician (as we know) and meets Charlie, his assistant.  Charlie, has a sister.  I Theorize that this sister is Wickerbottom.  She was taken with Charlie and Maxwell via the Codex Umbra when she accompanied Charlie who came looking for Maxwell in his workshop.  Wolfgang, Wigfrid and Wes were already trapped in DS, from train crash so they have actually been there longer than Maxwell (since Maxwell escaped for a few years to be a magician on earth).  Now that Maxwell is back, why doesn't he escape again?  Well let's assume he used the codex Umbra to escape the first time, but now it can not longer keep "Them" under Maxwell's control so he can't use it to escape again.  This sequence of events explains why, when you play Wickerbotton she already knows tier 1 crafting.  She's been wandering around DS as long as Maxwell, she has been through the teleportado in an old DS world.  It also explains her insomnia (she's afraid of the dark, and knows that she should be from her previous world).  Wes is trapped until the player (Wilson) frees him.  It is reasonable to assume that Wolfgang and Wigfrid were trapped when they originally arrived with Maxwell after the train crash.  NPC Maxwell frees them around the same time as Forbidden Knowledge (a little before or after).

This brings me to Willow and WX-78.  WX-78 is Robert Wagstaff.  He designed the Voxola PR-76 radio seen in Forbidden Knowledge and in the divining rod.  Some how his radio design was able to pick up Maxwell from the DS universe.  Maxwell gives Wagstaff forbidden knowledge, which Wagstaff uses to turn himself into a clockwork man (WX-78) using the same technology as the clockwork monsters.  WX-78 builds one of Maxwell's doors in his radio factory to bring an army of clockwork monsters into the world and rule.  Maxwell thinks he can use the door to escape DS, so he eggs WX-78 on. It plays out similar to what happens to Wilson, except just as WX finishes there's a fire.  (We where told the factory burnt down).  Now let's think, Who starts fires?   Willow was there that night, she set the factory on fire and some how was taken into don't starve by Maxwell's door with WX-78.

Wilson gets one of Wagstaff's radios, which can pick up Maxwell's "signal" from inside DS.  Maxwell appears to Wilson because Wilson bought Maxwell's old workshop in upstate New York as his own laboratory.  Maxwell senses the radio in his old workshop and calls out to Wilson to build another door.  He still thinks he can use a door to escape, because WX-78's door was destroyed in the fire before Maxwell had a chance to try.  So Wilson build's the door, but Maxwell discovers that his door only works one way.  In not out.

This leaves Wendy and Webber.  I think both are related to Maxwell.  William Carter had a brother with Twin children (Wendy and Abigail) let's assume.  For some reason, William's brother comes looking for him.  William's brother and William's niece, with her dead sister's flower, are taken by the door which Wilson built in what was once William's workshop.  Williams brother is in DS but not a playable character (yet) in this theory.  The last character to arrive is Webber.  He and his farther come looking for William's brother (who disappeared looking for William).  They are friends or relatives from Scotland (I'm guessing this based on Webber's comment on the Tam O' Shanter).  Remember, William and his family are from England.  They follow the trail (again) to Maxwell's workshop (more recently Wilson's lab), and are sucked through the door Wilson built.  Webber dies in DS, and is resurrected by the player as a spider-thing.   Webber's father is not yet a playable character.  That's my theory on all the character's origins.
