The Rise Of Literacy

"...Yes, I suppose I was quite forgettable, in a way. Far from the first to have appeared. Though that's beside the point.

...

Has she told you much about them?"

"No, I thought y-"

"Of course not. Do you think they'd let me? I suppose the most I could do in that regard is give you this.

Take it. And please, leave as soon as you can. I can't expect they'll be too happy when they find out you have this."

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

Species-What your character is (Not required for humans)

Backstory-What happened to your character leading up to their "disappearance"

Personality-How your character acts

Disadvantages

NOTES

-Upon the acceptance of your character application, your character will be given a book, real or no, that reflects on their personality/backstory. I will put this on the OP, so be sure to check.

-Many things in this roleplay will be book/lore-based, ranging from Will o' Whisps to Blast-Ended Skrewts.

CHARACTERS/ROLEPLAYERS I FORGOT WHICH

@Bekuno - Bekuno

Species- Precursor/Human

Appearance: Bekuno is 5' 5", and has fair, freckled skin. Her hair is Blonde with pink dyed underneath and a strip of pink in her bangs, her hair is almost always tied up. Her eyes are bright blue and she has an odd 'P'-looking symbol on her face. Ears are pointed, but otherwise normal. Her usual attire is a grey sweater, shorts, thigh-highs, and a pair of pink converse.

Backstory- After having finally defeated the final Celsus Bule, a monster dictator that controlled the floating island of Arbodia (Bekuno's home in her past life), she has finally settled down in Germany. With a good 20 years taken from her life due to the damage cause by the Ouroborus' power in her activated form, shes much weaker than she used to be. Another activation could cost her her life once and for all, but with the Celsus Bule gone she has nothing to worry about. Along with this, she's still seeing the shadows. Tyco (a friend from her past life and previously a shadow) is dead however, and she doesn't understand why they still hang around her. Even speaking to them in her Latin tongue gives no answers. Aside from that issue she is currently living with her pyromaniac boyfriend, Finn, and filing her role as the lead singer of his band, Panic In Paris. When she's not lounging around the apartment, doing local shows, or blogging she is hanging out Dave's bar or running around with Finn and Alex. She's just happy to have put all the trouble behind her and go back to being a normal teenager.

Or so it seemed. After awhile she started noticing more and more shadows, not the kind she was used to. They did not respond to her Latin and they took on a different form. Her old nightmares began to return to her and Bekuno started to research more. Finally one of the shadows spoke up, saying they needed her help and Tyco was waiting for her. She scoffed at it, said that Tyco was gone and she no longer had any help to provide, but it didn't take no for an answer. She was dragged down by the shadows into a portal, and the rest we all know.

Personality- Bekuno is witty, blunt, and over-protective. She doesn't get the of personal-space even around strangers, until you snap at her about it. She likes having connections and information, if she doesn't know whats going on she'll bug you about it until she does. From her end she's good at making friends even if the other person doesn't consider her a friend yet. She can speak English, Latin, and a small amount of German. She has a short-temper and often acts before thinking. Very stubborn about her ideas, she wont always force them on you, but she won't change them either.

Advantages:

Agile: Her legs are long and powerful, she can run and move quickly. Thank her parents for forcing her to play soccer.

Activation: A last-resort power. Seriously last-resort as using it will cost her life. If Bekuno is given a concussion she will become activated. When activated her eyes glow and her human vision leaves her, turning her into a senseless monster. Her human form will change as seen by the spines growing from her back, the growth of her arms to a much larger size, an unhinged jaw, and claws growing from where her fingernails had been. This also summons her true form as a separate being, think of how the jaguar is used in road to el-dorado.

Shadow Friend: When she starts to go nuts Tyco will appear. Tyco may disturb others, but cannot do any physical harm to them. He wards off other shadows.

Disadvantages:

Loud noises: Extremely loud sounds such as thunder, heavy objects crashing, or sudden booms will frighten her horribly.

Lack of weapon training: Aside from guns and baseball bats, she doesn't know how to use weapons.

Not the strongest: Unlike her legs, she doesn't have much upper body strength. She'll throw quite a few punches, doesn't mean they'll be very good.

Last Resort: Her activation is a disadvantage, as it will kill her if used. Any survival chance will still leave her mortally wounded. Third times the charm.

Book - The Fault In Our Stars

It's a book about a person with cancer. That's all I know about it. When flipped through, a cloud of disease seeps out of it

@Blewcheese - Zach

Species: Human/Shaman

Appearance: Zach's black hair is long and untrimmed. He stands tall at a height of 6 feet, and has broad shoulders with a powerful structure. There are faint markings on his brown eyes, as if they were cracked in some way. His blue shirt and jeans are very patchwork in some places, and a bit too small for the man.

Backstory: Zach, even in his infancy, adored the outside world. Unfortunately, he was also blind. This resulted in his parents rarely allowing him to explore the wilderness around their house. Now, his parents adored their child, it was simply a matter of safety that their blind six year old son did not voyage into the forest whenever he wanted. Zach, although he wished to obey, couldn't keep himself from the rich forests. He would take detours coming home from school, or leave when both of his parents were at work, or simply sneak out his window in the middle of the night.

He had done this for two years without his parents finding out about his adventures. During these years, he found that a faint whispering was guiding him forward throughout the forest, helping him traverse the thorns and poison ivy and such. Eventually, he found out that it wasn't one voice, but multiple. It wasn't long after that before he could strike up conversation with the voices.

Unbeknownst to him, Zach had been speaking to the trees. He hadn't gone mad or anything, he simply gained the ability to speak to the plant life around him. And once the young boy heard the voices, it was easy to respond or quiet them, because it would be a horrible headache to listen to all of the trees in the forest simultaneously.

Eventually, however, Zach's parents caught him sneaking back from the forest in the middle of the night. Their nine year old son tried to explain that he heard the voices of the trees and grass, but they quickly decided it was just a game that their son was playing. After they discovered their son's adventures, Zach's parents locked Zach's door each night, and forbade him from leaving the house unless it was for school.

Again, the two parents loved Zach very much, this was simply an act of safety. For what if he had tripped and fallen too far into the forest, and couldn't return home? Or what if he had gotten lost? Or eaten by a bear? Zach, however, was thoughoughly convinced that his parents despised him. So, one day, on his way back home from school, he bolted into the forest. Needless to say, his parents were distraught at their child's disappearance.

Zach lived in the forest for many, many years. He had lost track of the days after five years, and continued living in the forest for fifteen more. He became very friends with the trees around him. These trees, seeing that this human wasn't a regular human who wanted to expand their gray land of smoke and flames over the bountiful forest, taught Zach how to manipulate their branches, how to borrow power from the nature around him.

One day, Zach heard a new voice. It didn't sound like any tree he'd ever heard, but it seemed to silence the speech of the other plants. It's calls seemed to beckon the man, and he began fumbling towards it. Unbeknownst to him, he was walking blindly into the arms of a terrible dark force. When the trees tried to warn him, the darkness simply silenced them. The next thing Zach knew, he was sitting in the world of Don't Starve, with the sound of new trees all around him.

Personality: Zach doesn't trust other humans as much as he does plants, but it isn't very difficult to befriend him. He dislikes any place that he can't be near nature, so he tends to stick to forests. He fairly happy-go-lucky, and isn't the most mature for his age.

Advantages:

Treespeak- Zach can speak to plants, and they can speak back. In this way, he can be warned of approaching danger by having the trees relay information.

Strength- Living in a forest for about twenty years has given Zach a powerful build and strong physical strength.

Nature's Blessing- Zach has the ability to make himself stronger, or others, based on the amount of plant life around him. This could mean anything from strength to speed to a more powerful ability. However, nature requires repayment, and will sap energy from Zach after he performs this depending on how much power he took.

Disadvantages:

Blind- Zach is blind. Without the guidance of trees and/or others, he will be relatively useless.

Adores Nature- Zach despises anyone who so much as attempts to harm nature. Make sure he's not nearby when you chop down trees or pick grass and whatnot.

Book - Herbology

A gigantic book full of information on plant life. Excellent fuel.

@Lord_Battal - Percy & Spriggums

Spriggum

Species: Treeguard

Appearance: Spriggum is a giant, walking pine tree. He stands about fifty feet tall, a feature aquired by his very, very old age. His needles are a dead, orange-looking color, and he has three arms, the extra protruding from his side. His trunk is hollow, and contains his organ system. Backstory: Spriggum was once a member of the Entmoot, a meeting of the strongest and wisest treeguards. Being only a small, normal treeguard, unburdened by thoughts of vengeance, Spriggum was very proud to be with them. However, one night, a crazed pyromancer attacked one of the meetings. Though the treeguards fought their hardest, they all burned to a crisp in the end. All, except Spriggum.

Holding the corpses of his dead friends, a feeling of indescribable hate and anger rushed through Spriggum. He absorbed the last bits of life force from their logs, swearing to each of them that all of humanity would pay for their crimes. In doing so, he gained wisdom and power. He then set off to purge humankind from this earth.

Personality: Spriggum usually tries to kill anything human on sight, sparing other races until they offend the enviroment. However, he never hurts children, as he views them as saplings that he should protect. In rare circumstances, however, he can learn to trust some people, and even befriend them. Spriggum refuses to harm anything from nature.

Advantages: Spriggum's main advantage is, unsurprisingly, his strength. He can shatter entire ribcages with just his bare hands, crush things with his weight, and punch people into next week. Besides that, there's not much more to be said.

Disadvantages: Spriggum is very slow, half because he's ginormous and half because he has to make sure he doesn't crush anything important. As such, he's also bad at dodging attacks. A small fire will hurt him alot, but an uncontrolled blaze is almost sure to kill him.

Percy

Race - Human (Ghost)

Looks - A semi-transparent boy wearing all grey clothing. A large chunk of his side is torn messily out. His eyes have no pupils.

Backstory - Percy led a rather normal life until his parents were murdered in their sleep by a recently escaped serial killer. Having no other living relatives who would take him in, he was sent to a foster home. Percy stayed here for only a couple months before constant abuse and depression led him to gouge out the eyes of the administrator. Logically, this did not go down well with him, and Percy was institutionalized in a local insane asylum. After a couple days in a rubber room (Which were spent with Percy pounding on the walls and spouting gibberish), a shadow appeared on the wall. It whispered stories of plenty, happiness and sanity to the boy, and told him he could have it if he would only come with it. Of course, he came, and he found himself trapped in Their world.

The shadow gave nothing that it promised, save for an old locket Percy's parents had had. The boy survived for only a few days, but in his state he was soon killed by a hound. But not even this could set him free, for They bound his soul to the locket, stranding Percy in the hellish world forever.

Personality - Percy is usually quite reclusive and quiet, only speaking when spoken to and often in short sentences. He is usually unoptimistic and grim.

Advantages - Percy's most useful capability is possession. He can invade another's mind and force them to do things against their will. However, the tougher the target, the harder it is to control them...and the pain is greater. He can also move heavy

Book - Neither

A painfully generic horror story. Makes all creatures in the area immaterial when flipped through.

@Minik435 - Ferro

Race: Lizardman

Looks: Green scales are on all his body. His eyes are green too. He is wearing a brown archaeologist's jacket, hat, pants and have not boots. Two teeth are out of his mouth.

Backstory:

He was in Amazon's jungle searching for new species of lizards (he wanted to find another intelligent life forms). Through his trip he just fell into hole that he not expected. After over a week, he was dehydrated almost to death and then human called Maxwell offered a help to him. He agreed and teleported to the island. But it was unexpected "help" from weird human.

Personality:

He is nice to other life forms (that is his work actually) and attacks only when he is attacked or he lose control on his emotions (or if it's just needed).

Advantages:

- Poison teeth

- Scales

- Swims great

Disadvantages:

- He need to eat most of time

- He is feared by fire

- He hates cold weather

- He can lose his mind if he will kill too much animals

Book - Counteracting The Fermi Paradox

Contains muliple methods on finding and interacting with foreign beings. When flipped through it calls anything around oneself out of hiding.

@Silentdarkness1 - Tritus

& Clarice

Tritus

Race: Human?

Looks: A white man with blonde hair in a crew cut, with yellow eyes. Wears jeans, boots, a shirt and jacket.

Backstory: Tritus was once a gracious, heroic and honorable warrior in the Dragon Realms. He served his town, a medium-sized village, admirably all of this life. A few days after his 25th birthday, however, there was an incident. It left him and another female warrior that he was so very much in love with, in the clutches of an unspeakable, horrible evil. He was strapped down and forced to watch the love of his life butchered, in an extremely slow, gruesome, manner, something that not even Tritus can bring himself to fully recall.

Dark power sweeping over him, he broke free and fought his way out. Tired, weary and still thoroughly traumatized, he made his way back to the village, but only wreckage and ashes remained. After searching around, he discovered that a good deal of the civilians had been evacuated to a small abandoned village. He traveled there, a dark influence still hanging around him. When he got there, things were still wrong. Dark monsters, brooding creatures walking around. Perhaps they were hunting the civilians. Tritus did what came naturally, cutting down as many of them as he could before the rest fled. Finally, he came upon a small house, the door partially busted. He forced the door open, and faced down two grander-looking creatures as well as another of the lesser creatures. He quickly slayed the two grand creatures in a fit of rage before seriously injuring the last one. Screams filled the air. Only, once he was ready to finish off the last of the creatures, did the screams become familiar, the dark taint removing itself from Tritus's eyes. A terrible sight before him, his own parents, dead at his own hands, and his dear sister, the one wounded. Tritus nearly collapsed from the shock.

Then, a dark figure arose out of the shadows of that house, and mocked Tritus, spiriting him away into the DS world. He was given a strong curse that left him trapped in a human form, with all the strengths and weaknesses a human would normally have, his powers locked away.

Personality: Tritus is somewhat reclusive, almost unwilling to try and be near others, make conversations, or make friends. However, the brighter spots of his past leave him unable to resist a cry for help. When he does find a friend in someone, he tends to stick close, with almost a parental sort of guidance.

Advantages:

Agile:

Can often dodge most attacks.

Not Picky:

He gets his belly full a lot quicker off of raw meat than cooked meat, among other things.

Powers locked deep within:

He does retain some of the powers he had as a dragon, but he can only call upon those powers, in a limited amount, when it is a truly desperate scenario.

Disadvantages:

Untrusting:

Has trouble getting along with people who expect him to do lots of favors.

Sanity Problem:

Tritus goes insane much quicker, still carrying a trace of the dark taint with him. It is not clear whether the dark taint is part of Them, or something else entirely.

Light-Headed:

Passes out easily.

Book-The Encyclopedia Of Everything Fabled

Contains information on all mythological creatures from the Middle Ages. If one flips through all the pages in rapid succession, it summons a mandrake.

Clarice

Race: Human?

Looks: A medium-build red-haired lady with big orange eyes. She wears a red and orange dress. Her current situation in the DS world leaves her barefoot, however.

Backstory: Clarice was a young girl when her village was razed to the ground by the unspeakable horrors that broke Tritus's spirit. She had only friend throughout it all, a repressed man by the name of Christopher. Although Tritus and Clare were somewhat close friends before everything fell apart. She was forcibly spirited away to the DS world, too, again with a curse leaving her stuck in a human form. It isn't clear whether They intend to ever let the two meet, however...

Personality: Clarice is a generally outgoing and bubbly person under normal circumstances, although most of the things in Their world freaks her out. She is a rather tender person on matters of the heart, and more fragile on matters of the mind, the mental state. However, if she begins to dip into insanity, They can eventually overcome her friendly personality, making her become more and more....gruesome.

Advantages:

Fire Gems: Due to a defect with her powers being forced in human form, she can produce Red Gems with ease.

Inner Passion: She can produce enough internal heat to help keep warm in winter, however this all by itself is very draining.

Disadvantages:

Weak: Cannot fight very well at all.

Gruesome: Don't let her go insane, or else.

Book - None

@ - Felicity & Daxx Wulfric

Age: 16

Gender: Female

Species: Human

Backstory: Felicity was always an unlucky girl; always in the wrong place at the wrong time, a failure in love, money, and prosperity. She was separated from her twin seven years ago, when the greed and divorce of parents split them up. She had been arrested once for "stealing" someone's bag that dropped on her head as she walked home from under the bridge. She was convicted not guilty, but it doesn't change the fact that fate does not like her. Felicity has tried everything to change her fate; charms, spiritual guidance, praying and even a simple exorcism to see if a spirit was plaguing her. No matter what she tried, everything seemed to be against her. Even those around her could notice this, which was generally why they left her alone; they didn't need her luck rubbing off on them.

Then, one day, everyone noticed something subtly off about Felicity. She seemed more tired than normal, but everything about her seemed more positive, more cheerful instead of sulking. As the day wore on, everything seemed to be going happily for her; she found several bills of high value on her walk to school, she seemed to be getting things for free, everyone was paying attention to her. Small things were going her way for once. Felicity was absolutely thrilled about it

The next day was exactly the same, except something about Felicity was unusual. Yes, she did have a good day, but she seemed to have deeper bags under her eyes, and her hair seemed frazzled. Her whole personality seemed tired and off. That day, she didn't seem as elated as before, oddly enough.

The next day, she was nowhere to be found. Her divorced mother went around asking for where she was, asking the few friends she had, but no one knew where she went..

Appearance: She has hair the shade of a foggy day, which is styled in a bob cut, and wears a ragged taupe colored cloak, the edge outlined in yellow, along with an odd ring of glass on top of her head, a circlet resting on her forehead. Underneath the cloak she dons a simple piece of quilt-like cloth, looking as if they were created and sewed by hand. On her left arm is a thin golden bangle, two sigils inscribed on where the ribbon of gold ends. A necklace hangs around her neck, three objects dangling from the silk string. One resembles a crystal melded into a thin disk of gold, another like a circle both enclosed and outside another circle, and the last resembling a tiny bottle filled with beads of glass.

Personality: She's quite paranoid about topic relating to fate and spiritual ideas; why do you think she makes those charms? Mostly, however, she is quite charming and likable, an optimistic appeal to her. Just don't take the charms away from her; she will go beserk. The same goes for the injury of her twin, Daxx.

Advantages

Talismans, Charms, And Salt You can never have too much good luck, especially in such an unforgiving world. We've all heard of talismans and snake oil and all of those supposed charms. Many buy all these objects and scraps of paper, hoping that fate will smile on them. And yet, they never seem to work, apart from swallowing up money. However, these charms do work; perhaps not in the way they expect, but they do work, if made with the proper skill and details. Fortunately for us, Felicity is fairly adept at making charms, ranging from prosperity talismans to protection seals. The best part? They actually work, though they are quite fragile in comparison to others.

Disadvantages

Luck Has Limits As she has always relied on Lady Luck and spiritual seals, she is quite weak in terms of physique. Her mentality and spiritual energy is strong, yes, but her body itself isn't equipped to deal with physical pain. Also, the way her handmade charms are created is an equal exchange trade; she drains some of her own luck and spirit to form these safety wards and lifelines. Luck can be replenished easily, of course, but the soul is a little less persuasive to regenerate.

Side Notes: The speed at which she can make charms is dependent on the situation. She can't just make them quickly in the thick of a battle; she's too panicked to create the intricate, fragile charms. She needs to be in a calm area.

Book - Architecture for Infants

A very straightforward book on architecture. Opening it creates a knee-high barrier around you.

Name: Daxx Wulfric, Charles

Age: 16

Gender: Male

Species: Ten Parts Human, Five Parts Corruption

Backstory: (Essentially the same as Felicity's, except with a harsher deal.)

Appearance: Having taupe colored short hair, he has his hair styled in such a way that it is drawn over one of his eyes. His eyes, one green and one purple, have the odd aspect of always appearing clouded over. He wears an odd, long knitted turtleneck sweater that has one long sleeve on his right arm and one short sleeve on his other side. The turtleneck sweater stretches out so long that it more of a robe then anything. He wears a men's smock underneath the overly large sweater

Personality: He has an absentminded look to him, and he is, to a degree, forgetful and quiet, but he is mostly grim. He has a monotonous quality to his entire demeanor. The spirit, when in full control of Daxx, is joking, quite cruel and has an innate interest in the occult.

Advantages

Split Minds Having a corrupted being sharing your body has its quirky perks, even if they aren't immediately evident. The resistance to spells, such as mind control or possession, is nice, but the real perk is the mere fact that, since they share bodies, they both have an influence on each other. The spirit can control the teen's limbs to a degree and mention whispers or suggestions into his mind. The boy, in turn, gives the being a conscious and morality, and can also control the being to an extent.

Disadvantages

Seals And Salt Since he has a malicious being lodged unwillingly inside of him, he does have unusual vulnerabilities; for example, her twin's charms, mostly exorcist charms and salt rings, can harm him in a drastically proportionate way. To a more broader point, he is quite weak against any sort of protection that is meant to harm or ward off a spirit of evil, as the pain between the being and Daxx is shared equally.

Side Notes: Corruption of Daxx derives on his state as a whole; despair and insanity can destroy the entirety of his being, thus making it easier for the being to control him. His flesh tastes like a tomato.

Depends. I've honestly never seen you do any kind of professional writing. So if you can show me how good you are at writing, and give your character a more serious con while you're at it, I'll be able to make a more accurate decision. Right now the only thing I can judge you on in that area is grammar.

This is...interesting. I write fan-fictions, mind if I join in? I have a character that had plenty of backstory.

Name: Tritus

Race: Human?

Looks: A white man with blonde hair in a crew cut, with yellow eyes. Wears jeans, boots, a shirt and jacket.

Backstory: Tritus was once a gracious, heroic and honorable warrior in the Dragon Realms. He served his town, a medium-sized village, admirably all of this life. Btw, KidneyBeanBoy, can I include another character or two, perhaps? Ones that are related to Tritus's "book"?

@geni0529

I'm more concerned about quality over quantity. And that doesn't really count as showing me a sample of your writing.

@Minik435

That application looks great, but again, I'd need to see how well you'd write. And your grammar is actually pretty good aside from a couple verbs.

@Silentdarkness1

Accepted, I'll put add your application later.

And it depends.

- Humph... how great do I writing? - I though on it suming my achievements in writing.

Just joking. I wrote about 150 pages of my own book (it is polish so you won't understand it).

I just need to make is as good as it is possible there. For example:

[...]Michael looked at crystal on the top of cave and said to Dann:

- I have never expected that it all can be in our world.

- Nobody expected. If you have a lot of problems, that just does not matter. - he replied.

- So... tommorow magic exams for you? - he changed theme to don't get into philosophic talk.

- Yeah. I really don't know what can happen, if I fail it. I studied it for about eighty years. - confirmed Dann looking at changing colour of ceiling.

- Huh, I'm here for few months and I still can't believe that, I will live so long.

- Tail, don't forget about tail - Dann smiled to Michael.[...]

Translated by me.

And I know that's most just a talk.

Emma woke up to a fresh morning, but she wasn't in her cozy baby blue room, she was in the wilderness, a forest with pine trees was stretched out in front of her along with a tall man. his eyes had dark gray bags under them as if he never slept, he was a pale white color, and was wearing a suit with gray stripes, then the man said to her " say pal you don't look too good , better get food before night comes". The tall man disappeared with a puff of smoke and she was alone.

(Want me to just submit the bios anyways, see if that helps you make up your mind?)

(I guess so.)

- Humph... how great do I writing?

You're accepted. Though it might be useful to remember that english uses a " (or ') instead of a - to signify speech. But then again you could just run things through an English grammar checker and change it for you. : p

There's no way to put this gently, so.....perhaps you should just stick to normal roleolaying...Please don't hate me. Edited by KidneyBeanBoy

(Alright, here we go then.)

Name: Clarice

KidneyBeanBoy, if you'll accept this one, i'd rather PM you the second one. It's intended to be a surprise.

Name - Percy

He can also move heavy objects if he concentrates enough, but this rarely works and even carrying a piece of wood is difficult.

Disadvantages - Due to his being binded to the locket, Percy cannot go more than a couple meters away from it.  That, and he cannot carry it himself.  Attacks to his ethereal form do nothing to him, but if the locket is broken he will die.  (Again.)  He cannot interact with physical objects without effort, but at the same time he cannot float through walls like your normal cliche ghost.

Oh dear... Are there only two more spots, or is that the number before you start?

The number before I start. I'll probably let 1-2 more in afterwards.

Tentatively accepted. Just don't godmod.

something about him seems familiar.

Mmm I've never RP'd on these forums, I don't know what to expect, but I'm tempted. I'll throw in an application and some references and give it a shot.

Name: Bekuno

She doesn't get the idea of personal-space even around strangers, until you snap at her about it.

References for my writing: [x] and [x] or I can whip you up something in a PM, but I can assure you I have proper grammar and spelling, I make straight A's in AP English classes.

(Looks like I'd better submit an app before this fills up.)

Name: Zach
