Willow Needs A Buff

Recommended Posts

One of Willow's biggest perks is that she doesn't take fire damage. I think that Willow needs a buff (at least in the DLC, probably not in the core game.). Maybe that she doesn't take damage from overheating. All i know is that with the scalemail, one of Willow's biggest advantages is down the drain.

It's already been said that removing damage from overheating won't be done, since that takes out the biggest danger of the season. Apart from that, I'm not too sure what else could be done.

Perhaps Willow could simply be more resistant to overheating in the same line of thought that Wilson's beard helps protect him in winter. That seems innocent enough.

Honestly, I think Willow's biggest perk is gaining sanity from fire. (I know it isn't a huge perk) I haven't faced the horrors(?) of the dragonfly yet, though. If she can smother items about to catch in fire in summer barehanded without drawback that's nice too (it's kind of like fire damage? If she can't she should)

Basically, Willow would be the summer specialist character with those perks. I think she'd still be kind of meh, to be completely honest, but it'd bring her up to a good degree, especially since Summer is arguably the hardest season. Some people would probably consider her worth using for more than just "I like Willow!" at that point.

Here, a basic but logical buff for Willow: whilst overheating, gets dapperness buff. So, whilst you'd be dying, you'd be becoming more sane (because Willow is f$%#ing loopy). That's a 'something' - which is better than nothing.

... Only issue with that is, logically, you'd have to apply the opposite during Winter - making Winter bloody hard for Willow. Hmm. Maybe whilst being affected by the elements (overheat/wet), the lighter brings more comfort to Willow? That's all I've got. Sadly, the issue with that is it encourages micro-management (since you're often trying to stop being affected by the elements, which would mean swapping between lighter and other stuff...).

Zzz.

I like the smothering not doing damage to her, and the sanity from overheating. It's interesting and dangerous, that's for sure. Perhaps she should only gain minimal/no sanity until she's actually taking damage?

I don't think sanity from overheating makes any sense... nor would it be of almost any use, since you're still basically never going to let yourself overheat on purpose anyway. Would you rather be low on Sanity or about to die?

Making her just be a bit more resistant to overheating (like Wilson's beard protects him in Winter) seems reasonable and fairly useful, but it falls off after you actually start preparing for summer in advance in your games, so while it's good when you're new it's still not exactly a really strong power (aka I think it's perfectly balanced). No damage from smothering would make her fire damage resistance actually be relevant and really solidify her as the summer specialist character, but I could understand it not being implemented.

Scalemail in finite, willow's power is infinite and doesn't have to fight the dragonfly to get it.

Willow gets a sanity boost from fire, while no one else does.

Willow also has a infinite torch.

Willow is still awesome and worth using.

Like WX-78, I'm not a big fan of their night-lights. It's rather tiny and leaves the player very vulnerable. The sanity buff from Fire is a huge asset, but I'm unsure if it's as good as it was when Summer and Winter were less profound.

As for Scalemail, I'm sure there's other dimensions to it that make it more prevalent to be honest. I do agree that all these tiny perks aren't that tiny to a good player, but the state of balance at the moment does make her perks weaker than others. Perhaps that'll change in time.

The little lighter adds a slight sanity, which when used while wearing a winter coat, can negate the sanity decrease at night. Really useful if your base is a tinderbox, and good for running around in the caves if you know where your going.

Whilst WX needs to be struck by lightning, he gets complete immunity to the cold and a health buff and a speed buff. He then has the gears perk. Whilst Willow's ability to negate prevailing sanity modifiers is a plus, a few items into a game's progression soon realises Willow's terrible stats to be more of a burden than something worth trading for a tiny night-light and OP sanity from fire. I mean, I can see how her Sanity buffs are amazing for, say, Adventure, but once some items are picked up, Sanity isn't an issue anyway (besides, Willow has less Sanity than even WX-78 without gears, I believe).

Hypothetically, Willow's low Sanity is as much an asset as it is a burden, but I think the chance of Willow being overwhelmed by aggressors whilst having to micromanage her Sanity is almost a bit too much that no other character has to deal with. Sure, she's unique, but I only play her when I'm not intending to ever fight more than Tier 1 creatures.

Her ability to fight within a inferno and gain massive sanity is amazing tool. Plant some trees in a circle and you can fend off hound attacks without lifting much of a finger. Though giants don't care about fire damage, you can still give yourself a huge advantage with the extra damage and sanity.

While the sanity is a problem, I think she still makes a great character to play. A buff might just be a little too much.

Maybe if they make planting trees easier and less "BU-BORP, CANNOT PLACE HERE", that'd be an amazingly fun utility to fight with. However, at the moment, I get frustrated enough setting up trees that aren't in a perfect row, let alone...

Well, if you all insist that she's fine, I suppose someone will just have to play test her along side Wilson and draw some comparisons if the protest perseveres.

Invest in flowers and cooked green mushrooms. Make a bunch of flowers before spring and you'll have a way to stay sane.

Didn't I already say as much? Either way, you can assume I know those tricks. Try playing, er, A Cold Reception as WX 78 without flowers or mushrooms. And even if you do use them, what about maps where there isn't a Swamp biome? You've only got access to a handfull of green mushrooms then.

If the only thing Willow got was the lighter she would be a fine character. I don't see why anybody would think "immunity to night" isn't enough...

honestly, I think the biggest problem with willow atm is that most of your base is now flammable. This hits willow especially hard as when willow's sanity drops, she occasionally starts small fires. This is especially problematic during the nightly hound raid or if one was doing anything that involved heavy sanity drain prior to having a large stock of sanity replenishing items.

If you didn't even have the materials with you to make a torch, you're either very new or something is very wrong.

The light range is almost nonexistant on it so I'd probably make a torch anyway. Honestly, if it wasn't for the small sanity regen it gives I wouldn't even bother giving it an itemslot when I'm not using a backpack (which is most of the time), and once I have a walking cane and other good items it ends up staying at the base.

I kinda liked her old ability where she was just literally immune to night, at the cost of losing chunks of sanity before her fires came out (also it being fire), but I understand why it's changed.

The point of her lighter is to help you gather more ressources by using it at night time on the first few days, while other chars' can't do it unless they spend a few ressources to build some torchs. Otherwise i have to admit it becomes a bit useless later on.

I'm still on the stance that Willow should have complete overheating resistance and a harder time in winter. I know I'm like the only person who thinks like that, but still.

Maybe either more resistant to overheating or can send overheat into other mobs around him or sanity buffs.

It seems with characters, the goal is to give them something unique that no one else can obtain (save for Wilson, he's the base character). Even though it may be hard to get and rather rare, having such fire resistance obtainable does harm Willow's ingenuity.

I don't imagine Klei making her immune to overheating, nor do I really want them to. While it isn't the most interesting thing in the world, I'd settle for some heat resistance, and maybe the sanity while overheating thing. It may not be too useful, but it'd be something new and exclusive to her.

I know that it won't be implemeneted but... Just try to imagine it for a moment. Willow throwing a fireball once a day... Damn... BURN! LET IT BURN!
