Nothing at all appears in it. trace.txt appears, but it's empty. Afterwards, trying to use trace_flow() just crashes the game.

Well, trace_flow() is working fine over here. It couldn't crash the game, since it only uses the standard Lua library. The only error it could raise was if it failed to open trace.txt for writing, but then it would raise an error saying precisely that.

Try typing just trace_flow() in the console and run around a bit. Then close the game with ALT+F4 (or whatever, not sure which OS you're in), since it'll get way too slow for other methods.

trace_flow() simply crashes my game. Either way I use it.

Then I can only conclude there's something really strange with your game installation, since pure Lua is crashing it.

I agree, something is really off here. Steam says the game is fine, and I'm definitely on the public preview. I'll try on my laptop, and see if that makes any difference.

this is the log for the beanstalk climbing crash, I can't read this one to find the source, its far too complex for me =P

 

edit; after looking again at the start I , may uninstall other mods completely, even though they arent active they are showing up clogging the log.txt

 

I don't see a crash error there. :/

 

Anyways, the crash doesn't happen on my laptop. I'll uninstall and reinstall the game and see if that solves it.

The entity creation profiler shouldn't still be enabled, copy rc.defaults.lua on top of your rc.lua, or at least set

PROFILING.ENTITY_CREATION.ENABLED = false
in it.

But more importantly, try running the command I gave debugman (the one with the trace_flow()) and post trace.txt here.

The entity creation profiler shouldn't still be enabled, copy rc.defaults.lua on top of your rc.lua, or at least set

PROFILING.ENTITY_CREATION.ENABLED = false
in it.

But more importantly, try running the command I gave debugman (the one with the trace_flow()) and post trace.txt here.

You'd have to create it (by copying rc.defaults.lua and renaming the copy to rc.lua). But that's not essential, that's just what you'd do to customize the options. If rc.lua doesn't exist, the values from rc.defaults.lua are used instead, so if the entity creation profiler is still enabled you're using an older revision. This also means you won't have the trace_flow() command.

This is not an error. I was making the profiler print the stack traceback (which just says "LUA ERROR" because that's hardcoded in the returned message), so this is a regular print. I was using that to track down the cause of the population explosion. I should've erased that from its code (which I just did and commited/pushed), but it doesn't affect our present discussion (except that, apparently, the profiler is still enabled for you). What I'm interested in is the file trace.txt created inside the mod folder.

EDIT: @simplex, where would you find the trace.txt it doesnt seem to be directly in the mod folder, even the search function is turning up nothing

This is very strange. This should happen before, when I had left MODROOT out of the path, but not now.

Just to check, you mean

right? Without the parentheses it certainly wouldn't work.

Here it's working fine. It gets properly written to the mod folder, with the expected contents. I changed its behaviour a bit just in case flushing the file contents doesn't quite work under Windows (this is a OS specific behaviour). Now on OSes other than Linux the file gets reopened on every line written, which always forces its contents to be written to disk. Please try again.

I'm attaching the trace.txt I get. When unzipped, it's ~80MB big.

Wait, try now. If I remember correctly, fflush() has a highly non-conformant behaviour under Windows, causing pending data to be discarded. So now it doesn't get called at all when the reopening scheme is used. Now at least SOMETHING should be written to disk.

It seems to me that the crashing is a Windows related issue, since my Mac does not experience it, and Linux does not seem to either.

Does trace_flow() cause a crash on your laptop also? It doesn't seem it's causing a crash for Craig. And I don't really see how it could.

Haven't tested it on the laptop, I was referring to the climbing bug. I'll try on my laptop. As for it causing a crash, I have no idea why it is, but it is. I'll try on my mac and see what the results are.

Edit: I'm going to reinstall Don't Starve and hope that solves my issues. These crashes don't make any sense to me.
