Shadowfall

Jakob draws his blade back, preparing to strike.  As does Joseph.

"Go ahead.  Prove how heroic you are, you parasitic weakling-"

They strike at the same time, Jakob's thrust going straight through Shadowfall's hood and Joseph's slicing through his neck.  Jakob steps back, leaving the sword embedded in the shade's head as he chokes and gasps for breath.  He slumps over unceremoniously, a puddle of viscous black liquid spreading out from his wounds.

The sword drains Shadowfall's soul, just as it did to so many others in the past.  His disintegrating body leaves nothing behind save for a couple pieces of armor and the accursed blade itself.  As soon as the demon's corpse is gone, it sinks trough the thin ledge and falls into the abyss below.

(Just realized that only Jakob and Joseph survived.)

Jakob's face still shows no emotion.  "I...I guess we did."

He turns away from the remnants of Shadowfall, and begins to talk back towards the entrance to the battlefield.

"We've lost too much.  Seen too much.  I don't even trust my own sanity anymore."

Jakob suddenly grips the sides of his head in pain, digging his fingers into his skin.

"Why does everything feel so...unfinished?"

(Well, that's good a spot to end on as any.)

As Jakob watches Joseph's celebration, he can't help but grin slightly.

"There should be quite a few others waiting to do the same."  He says quietly.  "Why don't you join them."

When Joseph turns back towards Jakob, he is gone.  Only a few floating sparks mark where he had previously stood.

(And here ends the longest roleplay on the forums thus far...)

Joseph watches the sparks that were Jakob's remains. "Goodbye, friend." A burst of fatigue catches up with the young mentlemancer as the tension flows out of his veins. He takes a look around the arena that held the final battle, recalling the events that had occurred during the journey. The strange arrival in the even stranger world, meeting Jakob in the crater, finding Azcar, meeting Will, the beacons, the soul trap, his reuniting with his mentor, the Warden, and finally.... This. The quest seemed to end abruptly. Half of Joseph told him that he had done it, and it was over. But the other half told him that if he were to live as long as Pops had, he would certainly find another adventure down the road somewhere...

He gazed upon the realm one final time before turning his back to it, the blade still held tightly. What he would do next was a mystery to him. He certainly couldn't return to where he once was and continue his grieving for Pops... He looked down to the blade in his hand. It was all he had left of his former mentor. But no, that wasn't true. All of the elder mentlemancer's teachings remained with the apprentice. He could no longer grieve his father, but would grow stronger to honor his memory. The latter half was speaking clearly to Joseph now. He would find another journey somewhere in the long life he hoped to lead... And for that, he must grow. Then and there, he resolved not to loose (or re-loose) anyone else dear to him. With that thought, he exited the arena.

Beyond the view of the now-parted group, the blade holding Shadowfall's soul spiraled towards oblivion, and towards the end of the demon's existence, even in death.  When the sea touches it, his reign of terror, destruction, and death will end.  Forever.  He will never return.

A hand reaches out from the cliffside, and casually grabs it out of midair.

And so the survivors parted ways

They thought never to meet once more

And though they may not for many days

Their paths will cross again

And though this story may be at an end

there will surely be more ahead

For there is one last thing that I have to say

You forgot to break the blade.

The End
