Issue: Steam Version Not Working for You

Recommended Posts

Corey    267

Some people have been having issues running the new Steam release of the Don't Starve Early-Access Beta. While there is one particular issue that is caused by having outdated video card drivers, that's not the case with everyone.

We'll be looking at any crash reports or issues with launching Don't Starve on Tuesday when we return to the office after the holiday. In the mean time, if you are experience problems loading or playing the new Steam version, there's a few things that will really help us out.

1) Make sure your video card drivers are updated MANUALLY. Sometimes the auto / windows update will say you are current, when you are not. Check your manufacturers website. This will fix some people's problems on the spot.

2) If your drivers are up to date, please let us know your full PC hardware specs.

3) Paste us any error messages or crash logs you encounter. If they're really long, you can use a service like
http://pastebin.com
.

We'll still be doing our best to respond to any issues over the long weekend, and once we're back in the office we'll be able to push a new build!

I just pulled the system info off the DirectX system scan utility so I apologies if it's a little ugly.

I tried the bug fixing suggestions I reinstalled every driver (video/audio) and unplugged everything and it didn't work.

I have quite the same system like te one above me. Only my graphics are better (1920x1080).

If it still can't be fixed I would like to ask for a key for Chrome. The demo worked fine on Chrome... If I have to proove that I bought it on Steam I would do so if you jus suggest a way.

Thanks for every reply.

Hey, thank you for continuing to work on this issue.

I purchased this game this weekend on Steam and have been playing quite a bit on my desktop. I want to say first of all, great game. I've had it a couple of days and according to Steam have already played over 10 hours, I'm enjoying it very much so far.

However, like others, I am experiencing a crash on my laptop. I click "Play" the window loads, then immediately closes without giving an error. I've just finished updating all my drivers on the laptop and I still get the same crash.

I do have to wonder, like a couple of posters, if that crash is related to Intel chipsets. The desktop (a gaming setup) has a GTX 560 ti. The laptop, of course, has integrated graphics. (And is quite crap.)

The Laptop's Specs.

If it would be of any assistance to the people troubleshooting this issue I can post the desktop's specs as well. The game works without any issues what so ever on the it, no crashes and no strange graphics bugs.

I also cannot run Steam version, even after updating the graphics drivers.

I can play the demo in Chrome fine, but the Steam version crashes with the message: "OpenGL c2.1 or greater is required to run this game. Updating your graphics drivers may resolve this issue."

Does anyone know how to get my Steam Product Key so I can unlock the Chrome version?

Thanks!

Well, I introduce myself to the community saying that I can't wait to play the game, seems really enjoyable even is still a beta!

However I haven't been able to play it yet. I have the same problem as most of laptop users here, which is that the game doesn't even start, when I click play it just displays a window for few seconds and it disappears , no critical message, no bipping, nothing (same problem as Ankou above here).

I know you are working hard so thanks in advance!

I tried playing around with Intel's card setting utility, but no changes seemed to have any effect. For now, I am hoping tomorrow's update fixes it.

I'm also having the same problem as the others; blank window opens and immediately closes. I'm also using it on a laptop that has an intel chipset. My laptop specs are:

Processor: Intel® Core2 Duo CPU P8400 @2.26GHz 2.27GHz

Installed memory (RAM) 4.00GB (2.90GB useable)

System type: 32-bit Operating System

I'm not that knowledgeable as others when it comes to computers so I'm not sure how to get as much detail as some other posts lol!

Hope you guys can fix the problem tomorrow! I really look forward to playing the game! :)

Thanks!

Seeing that these seem to be coming from only intel chipsets should certainly help track down the issue. I can't promise when that fix will make it out, but I can assure you that is a high priority issue.

We will update tomorrow as Soon as we have better info.

Thanks for your patience!

For those on laptop

I have 8GB of ram and an Intel HD 3000. I ran into some issues as well regarding this particular title. I did some fiddling around, Run the game in Windows XP (Service pack 2) [For those of you who don't know how, open task manager with the blank Don't starve screen still running, rightclick on dontstarve_steam and go to the program location, then hit properties on that and run in compatibility.] Now, close it and re open it. It will still be blank. Now hit the maximize button. That's when it worked for me, so try it

Before you ran it in compatibility mode, was it closing outright for you? So, running it in compatibility mode allowed it to stay open so you could maximize?

Now. i enjoy the game supremely. However, this game should not be struggling to be consistant on 60 FPS, it is not graphically intensive. I know beta, is beta, but please try and fix that

The reason it doesn't get to 60 FPS is because it's locked at 30.

Huh. Well that would definatly make sence. But even then, i have it drop to 20 etc

I attempted this for the issue I was having (crashing as Soon as the window opened) and I just wanted to confirm that it does not fix that issue. It still crashes immediately under any compatibility mode. I also toyed with settings and it still crashed right away. I couldn't resolve the issue on my own.

I'm just glad it runs on my desktop and grateful the devs are working hard on a fix. Thanks guys, hopefully I'll be able to procrastinate with this game Soon, away from home.
