Issue: Steam Version Not Working for You

Recommended Posts

I am aware of that Toaster Fu. I am only suggesting that chrome keys be given to the small segment of the population who have the game on steam where they can't run it, but don't have it on chrome where they can. I'm also trying to think of it from the business end: it may be simpler to give out some extra keys at this early stage, put a warning message about opengl 2.1 being required and a listing of what video cards are not supported because of this, and then provide a key chrome upon request after some form of verification for people who slip through the cracks beyond that point (this is where things can get murky, I admit); this seems more appealing as an outsider than however many man-hours it takes to permanently solve the opengl 2.1/old intel video cards issue. I should have worded my post more clearly in some parts, specifically I meant: With steam keys available to those that bought the game on chrome, it seems like you could have the reverse be true as well in certain cases determined by hardware limitations (new text is italicized). I'll edit in that change now, in fact.

I guess to put my entire suggestion more simply, consider this example: I own two cars, and one breaks down. I could get the broken down car fixed for X amount of time or money, or I can use my other car. In my case, I have one broken car and another car that I can drive for about 15 minutes at a time :).

Ultimately though, I am only making this suggestion to try to be helpful, and I do see plenty that could go wrong with it. If you fine folks at Klei can get a workaround to this opengl 2.1/intel card issue I'd be just as happy (if not happier) than I would be playing it using chrome, and if I came across as some kind of socialist trying to spread keys to the masses it was not my intent.

Just keep in mind that the steam page never advertised getting keys for chrome.

Toaster Fu, I know the Steam page did not advertise chrome keys. However, several laptop users, including myself, tried the Chrome Demo, which led me, and I imagine others, to believing that our systems supported the Steam version.

I know it's a beta, and there are a lot of bugs to be fixed, so I'm trying to be patient. I think this is something that will be ironed out over the next few weeks, and I can't expect a bug-free game until February. However, I can sympathize with users that would be frustrated with the error. If there's any way to help with the Intel chipset support, I'd like to help as much as possible. But, if it turns out that our chipsets will go unsupported, distributing Chrome keys would be fair for those of us who relied on the demo before purchasing the game.

It is a really fun game, and I'm looking forward to the finished version. :-)

Alas, the openGL crash build did not work for me.

A quick note about a comment made earlier:

In regards to everybody here with the intel cards causing issue, it looks like the issue revolves around your integrated Intel card has limited support for OpenGL.

I know that this doesn't hold for all of the intel integrated cards having the problem, but my intel HD4000 with drivers updated to the most current is advertised as supporting openGL up to 3.1. I am curious to know what limitations were being referred to?

If you are being affected by this issue and you are able to play the chrome version, fill out the form here providing the email address you used to play the chrome version and your steam id.

I pretty much have the same problem as everyone else, the game just instantly crashing with no error.

I've sent the message through the contact us feature.

Just a quick note to everyone not following this thread from the beginning, there appear to be two different problems getting thrown together here.

Problem 1: Some of us have a dark screen problem associated with the Intel card (see screenshot early in this thread) but the game opens and runs fine otherwise.

Problem 2: Others appear to be crashing--this is sometimes related to Intel cards (sometimes possibly not), sometimes there is an openGL related error message (sometimes not).

If you say "same as everyone" or "same as all the others" without more a more specific reference, it may not be particularly helpful to the devs.

To the devs:

I look forward to playing, and wish I could help you guys test something other than this graphics problem. :) Thanks for your hard work!

Actually, I did mention that it crashes instantly, referring to the second problem you specified. Also, I have an old ATI Radeon HD 3650, with which I'm able to run most modern games, so I would assume that it's not my card's fault.

Hi Guys,

I've got a Nvidia GTX 680 with the latest Nvidia Drivers and had the same issue. As Soon as I tried to continue my saved state, the game crashed.

But, when I used the glfix Beta Profile in Steam, everything was working fine again. I've only tested for around 30 minutes tough.

Should be OK now, Iriador - that was a temporary issue with the latest hotfix.

My game crashes when you click continue game from the main menu on my work computer. It has a ATI Radeon HD 5450 Graphic card. I am worried I won't be able to play it on my personal pc at home, but I do have a personally built gaming pc so I hope it works fine with gaming computers.

The glcrash branch of the Steam game has been updated to be a bit more stable.

Please give it a try but make sure you are actually on the branch. If you get a "You need OpenGL v2.1 or higher", you aren't on the glcrash branch. It's possible that you hit enter to submit the password which you cannot do. Please make sure you hit the button beside the text box to switch the branch!

Any additional information (how far into the loading process you get or don't get) would be helpful.

I'm also having problems with the Steam version of the game. I was running an older version of the Intel driver, 8.15.10.2253 which actually worked better. The Chrome demo worked fine, it averaged around 24-26 FPS and everything was totally playable. However the Steam version averages 9-10 FPS and it feels like my character is moving through jello.

I checked the thread and updated my drivers to 8.15.10.2555. This actually made things worse. The Steam version completely refuses to launch now. I dug around in steamapps\common\dont_starve\bin and found a bunch of crash logs with names like dontstarve_steam_69179_crash_2012_11_16T23_29_28C0.mdmp which are generated every time I try to launch the game and fail. Also, the Chrome version has dropped to about 20-22 FPS so it's a bit slower but still playable. So if you're having issues with Intel graphics, you might have some luck with rolling your drivers back to 8.15.10.2253 but the game will probably still run really slowly.

Specs:

Windows 7 64-bit

CPU: Intel Core i3 370 M

Video: Intel® HD Graphics (first generation)

RAM: 4GB

I've also included some benchmarks I gathered using Fraps:

OK, I am farther than I was. Now, when running Steam Don't Starve, I crash with a "dontstarve_steam.exe has stopped working" Windows error. Windows looks for a solution and then exits. This is at least different from the crash on "You need OpenGL v2.1 or higher" I was experiencing earlier.

Are you able to find a minidump (*.mdmp) file in your ~\steam\steamapps\common\dont_starve\bin folder? If so, can you attach that to a message?

Using the beta test glcrash build, I am able to play don't starve with an intel GMA 965 express chipset video card on my laptop. The game loads to its main menu smoothly and launches the game smoothly. However, the game itself experiences significant lag with slower movement and input delays. This lag seems to be present inside both the game and the menus once a game has been started. When I played the demo in chrome the game only had very slight occasional lag: with opera the lag I experienced was an inconvenience, while with the glcrash steam build the lag makes the game unplayable considering I would be playing a long-term survival game at roughly half speed. If I had to guess, the lag in the gl crash steam build may be based on the open gl 2.1 workaround drawing upon processing power rather than graphics power, which based on the limited research I did on the subject can lead to poor game performance. This is a step in the right direction, but some further improvements would have to be made to make the steam version playable for me. Thanks for the work, and keep at it! I'll continue to test new glcrash builds as they become available, and report on them.

Hi cnkandrew, are you able to try out the demo of the game again? It's Chrome only but I'd be curious to see whether you get better performance in there because the two solutions are very similar.

Hi JLK. No, I did not have a *.mdmp file in that location. However, I did have an error in the log.txt file. That message is below:

wow! i can play it!! intel gma 945 here

the main menu and loading screens are actually faster in the steam test build than the chrome demo for me (i experienced a slight lag in the chrome version, not sure about fps exactly). but the actual gameplay is slower in the steam test build than the chrome demo.

but still, i'm excited just because i can at least play it! thanks so much for your effort and hard work! love this game!

JLK,

I've tried out the chrome demo again, and it plays just like it always has. The chrome demo has occasional choppiness to it which only seems like it would really impair combat or timing-specific tasks that may be added later, and even then it would certainly still be playable. Based on streams I have seen of the game being played, it seems to be running at or close to full speed. With steam, it is just a clearly slower game that runs at roughly 1/2 to 2/3 normal speed, based on how long it takes tasks like harvest grass to complete. The steam version also has clear cases of input delay, which is not the case with the chrome demo at all. If you have any further questions for me, or things you want me to try, just send 'em my way!
