Issue: Steam Version Not Working for You

I am having the same issue as several other users. The game demo works fine in a browser, i purchased it on steam, and the graphics are unplayable. I have had no luck messing with the openGL settings, resolutions, screen mode, etc.

I updated my graphics driver to the latest before getting that crash.

I also checked my graphics drivers for the version of OpenGL it supports:

I tried running the game in compatibility mode under every option available.

I also tried checking the 256 color option. <--- this made things interesting

With 256 color something popped up about needing OpenGL 2.1 support, and then I clicked okay and another box popped up.

So I thought I would try opening this in OllyDbg to try to track down when exactly this happens but there is just way too much to step through before the issue arrises.

I would be more than happy to provide further help tracking down this bug, so that I can enjoy the game Sooner. I am one semester shy of having a bachelor's degree for software engineering. I say that just to let you know you can throw all kinds of complicated requests my direction and I can understand and comply.

Thanks for working on this issue so diligently! I'm sure the other intel chipset users appreciate your diligence just as much as I do.

MasterMeatBone, I think you're in the wrong thread. I think this thread is for people running the Steam client who cannot get the game to run at all because it crashes to desktop with an OpenGL error.

I believe your problem is a very common bug reported here:

I also cannot run Steam version, even after updating my graphics drivers.

I can play the demo in Chrome fine, but the Steam version crashes with the message: "OpenGL v2.1 or greater is required to run this game. Updating your graphics drivers may resolve this issue."

So, it appears my Intel 965 Express only supports OpenGL v2.0. Thus, Steam crashes, saying it needs OpenGL v2.1.

While this seems like a cut-and-dry issue of my on-board graphics being obsolete, why can I run the Chrome version with no problem? The mystery continues . . .

Mystery indeed! The chrome version works like a charm! Which is all well and good but I can only play the demo version and it just doesn't last long enough...

Ninjayjayjay, what are your computer specs? Can you please describe your error for the devs in a little more detail?

Also, I may have figured out the source of the bug, at least on my end. The Steam version for me crashes, saying it needs OpenGL v2.1, but the Chrome version works. Chrome actually uses WebGL, which is based off of OpenGL v2.0. So, my Intel 965 chipset, which supports OpenGL v2.0, can run the game in Chrome, but not on Steam because of the unsupported Steam OpenGL version.

Devs, can you verify this is the case?

Maybe in your case. But my Chipset supports OpenGL v2.1 and I have the problem that the game starts and then closes again without issuing an error message.

I think you need OpenGL 2.1.2 not just 2.1.0? I am not entirely certain because the error box says 2.1 or greater, but perhaps the error box meant to say 2.1.2 or greater?

hello everyone, i have the same problem as others, unable to play the steam version.

i do have an older intel integrated chip set: intel gma 945, but because i could play the chrome demo, i thought the steam version would be fine, so i ignored the sys req stated on the steam page.

i love the game -- charming visual style, great gameplay, great music and sound. but i was hoping there was a way i could get a product key for the chrome version, since i bought the game on steam.

I have same problem. Crash on game start on both computers! And chrome versions works perfect.

And the most pity think that I played demo on chrome and thought that if i will buy steam version i will got chrome version.(

I was having the window opening then closing bug, and was getting very frustrated. I even considered demanding a refund. However, I read the tips on this forum, and kept patient, lo and behold I am rewarded with a very fun game thanks to my now updated drivers. Thanks a ton!

When I start the game, a window pops up, that basically just copies whatever was behind it when it opened, the process uses 100% cpu, and nothing happens. I let it run for 10-15 minutes to see if anything would happen, but nothing ever does.

Tested after updating to latest 306 Nvidia Drivers, and latest windows updates.

@Attckcat - Can you try maximizing the window? We have had some success with that one. Also, make sure that you don't have any type of firewall, adblocker or antivirus that might be causing issues with the game.

In regards to everybody here with the intel cards causing issue, it looks like the issue revolves around your integrated Intel card has limited support for OpenGL. Please make sure that you have updated your graphic card. This may need to be done by actually removing the driver from your system and manually installing the newest version. This will likely not fix older cards as they just won't be compatible.

We are working on a fix, but due to the nature of the issue it may be a long way out. It requires a significant effort to resolve due to the intels limited support for opengl.

If you have one of these integrated intel cards you can also do the following. Head to don'tstarvegame.com and try the demo, confirm that it works for you there.

Use the contact us link, and send in your steamid and include the email address you used to check out the demo.

Ok, we have something to try for anybody with the issue that they CAN NOT run the game in steam, but can play in chrome. This should be mainly players with integrated intel cards.

PLEASE NOTE: This is only a test to see if we can get you into the game. This is an early test build that is NOT meant to be played by the general population. If you attempt to play this version outside of just this test, you are going to have a bad time; in general it is going to be pretty buggy.

Instructions:

  • Right click on the game in steam and select properties
  • Go to the BETAS tab
  • In the drop down box, select "glcrash"
  • For the password use "ThisIsATestBuildAndWillBeDeleted"
  • CLICK THE BUTTON to test the password. DO NOT HIT ENTER

Try and run the game and see if you get to the main menu.

I tried the test build but it did not work for me. But I have an intel gma 945 which does not support opengl 2.1 anyway. Still the Chrome version demo works for me.

Hi, I also was not able to get the test build to work. It crashed out with the same "OpenGL v2.1 required" error. The Chrome version works for me though. I'm running an Intel 965.

I was likewise unable to get the test build to work with an Intel Express 965 chipset, but the game demo does run in chrome with only slight lag.

I will be suggesting this in a direct "Contact us" message as well, but a possible fix may be to give chrome keys to people that bought the game on steam and don't have access to Opengl 2.1 or higher due to having an old intel graphics card. Since many of these users will be laptop owners (like myself), swapping video cards isn't really a viable option. With steam keys available to those that bought the game on chrome, it seems like you could have the reverse be true as well in cases of hardware issues or limitations. While I can certainly see why you may not want to do that across the board for every steam user, you may want to make it as an option available upon request. The person requesting it could be required to provide their steam key, steam name, and google chrome login email, and then send the chrome key to that specific login email. I personally sought to acquire the steam version because it would be more convenient for me, but having a product that works is obviously a higher priority. That said, this is just a suggestion, and I am VERY relieved that you are aware of this issue and pursuing a solution. I'll be checking this thread regularly for updates, so please keep at it!
