It's part of making your life better, really. Once a major update is announced, everyone zergs to the download, I mean you gotta check it out right? That zerg rush hammers the servers, making everyone's downloads slow, and that's annoying. Publishers got their bruises and learned their lessons, so the big stuff gets pushed silently and early. Players pick up the download at a healthy trickle, and the big release day doesn't make the servers catch on fire. I mean, there's also the chance that someone accidentally hit the "upload everything, even our secret content" button, but that's part of the fun too.
