I love basing by the moonstone. For me the best way to maximize the light from the altar is just to base there. It's even better when the moonstone is right next to the Antlion desert since I can build the majority of my base in the desert without worrying about wildfire. Based on my experience, there are a few things I always build right next to the moon stone:

1. I always put a couple of scaled furnaces close to the altar. This effectively eliminates the need for a fire pit and provides suitable temperatures for all seasons.

2. I build my kitchen next to the moonstone. When I am at base I frequently find myself cooking crockpot dishes, especially playing with friends. For long winter nights the polar light lights up the kitchen so you can still work freely.
3. I build a few chests that contain my most frequently used items (like pig skins, weapons, ...) near the moonstone for convenience. As an example I can recall that every winter I prepare Klaus fight during the night at base, grab a few pig skins for armors and hambat, ice and fire staves for the gem deer and make healing dishes at night. Then I leave right before the next day. No need to go to the bigger storage area.
4. Other ideas like putting meat effigy with basic supplies nearby, etc.
5. Other structures or items I don't use frequently are put farther away from the moonstone. I don't use tent much for example so I put it relatively far away from the star. Also for winter's feast event I suppose if the tent is close to polar light you wouldn't get gifts (didn't test, not sure).

 

That's pretty much it. Everything involves the idea of not having to use other light sources when performing things you most frequently do at base. Obviously by the time you get mushlights, having a permanent light source at base might not be that attractive anymore but still.
Once I've played in a public server that had both deserts and the moonstone connected, but I was so new to the game at the time and didn't even know about what you can do with the moon stone. Since then I am yet to find a world where the moonstone and oasis lake are right next to each other. That would be my ultimate basing destination.

I don't think I'll ever have a tidy base...  My base is always cluttered with ... everything a mole won't pick up and a pig won't eat lol

Your bases make me jelly, and this here is the most tidy base I have ever managed to make. It's still a bit messy :/

Here's a small base design I came up with while using console commands on a testing world(testing mods, building ideas and such) That I really liked, and am planning on recreating in a survival world in the near future. I decided to challenge my self and have a bit of fun by making the base shaped like a W.
