Rocket configuration to reach temporal tear (200,000 km)

Recommended Posts

I noticed that the ONI Rocket Calculator only went up to 110,000 km so I built a spreadsheet to try and figure out how much fuel is needed to get to the Temporal Tear. Since it is an insane amount of fuel I thought I'd check first to make sure this is accurate and there's not a better way. Apologies if this has already been asked, I tried searching first.

I want to carry 5 research modules, and I'm using a hydrogen engine + LOX. I tried it with the solid fuel thruster and it was worse.

  • Configuration:
    • Command module
    • 5 Research module
    • 4 Fuel tanks
    • 2 LOX tanks
    • Hydrogen engine
  • Module count: 13
  • Dry Mass: 2300
  • Wet Mass: 6073
  • Distance: 200,000 km
  • Penalty: 42,307
  • Fuel needed: 3037 hydrogen/LOX

Does that look right?

I didn't know that! I've never sent anything there. But it has the research objectives just like any other planet as well as hidden items in the composition so I assumed it was possible. Taking away the research modules doesn't change the fuel requirement drastically, it would still need 2,771 hydrogen/LOX, so the same fuel tank configuration. That's according to my sheet, which I'm not sure about.

Looks right. With 4 fuel, 2 OX and essentials, fuel curve is like this, which lines up with your 2771L at 200,000km.

I am happy to report that the calculations were correct, the rocket configuration listed above is able to travel 200,027 km.

On the morning of cycle 1151, Rowan boarded the Interstellar Virgo III and bravely blasted off into infinity and our hearts. The journey will take 54.5 cycles. I ended up taking the 5 research modules so I'll see if that makes a difference.

A monument was erected to honor his sacrifice achievement. Truly a dupe's dupe.

The key to getting google sheets to calculate the right amount is to enable iterative calculation to resolve circular dependencies, this can be done in the spreadsheet settings.

What about taking a sigh-seeing module? Can have a few more sacrifices heroes that way. Also thinking about including a flatulent one in future colonies to then be finally rid of it when the tear eats it. Hmm. What about a flatulent one in the sigh-seeing module?

I have actually never used a sight-seeing module, but I think they weigh the same as a research module (assuming the dupes don't add more weight). If you wanted to take 1 sight-seeing module you'd need 2827 kg hydrogen/LOX. I also imagined it might be like that, you take all the dupes/supplies you can carry and start on a new world. Imagine starting a colony with three vacillator-charged super-dupes.

It is interesting that it should be possible to take 1 cargo module, my sheet is giving me 3601 kg fuel but I wonder if it might be a rounding error. With 5 fuel tanks it is 3712 kg fuel. Two cargo modules is impossible, however. When I change the count to 2 the output says this:

Ah, yes. Max value of Double exceeded. The error message is wrong though, IEEE754 says this is "+Inf" as far as I remember. Cannot find my copy of it at the moment.

Why send research? It's not coming back.

I send a rocket to this location several updates before... This rocket came back with the dupe! Was it changed?

I've left Rime at cycle 870 with this rocket :

strangely, 2771 doesn't work for me

You probably fill too much your LOX tank. It's two tank but one with 2700 Kg and one with 900 Kg given you need 3600 Kg liquid hydrogen.

Nope:) It seems that it was a bug. Worked with 2800 for both

for what it is worth, my rocket and dup returned after the "one way" trip

But did it uncover any resources?
