Decent Webcomics

Recommended Posts

There are at least forty million free-to-read comics on the internet. Some of them are bound to be good, though they may not be immediately discoverable in the rancid webcomic swamps. Recommend some good ones you've found with a little description in terms of genre and stuff.

Paranatural by Zack Morrison. Urban fantasy, (copied from website) Paranatural is a comedy/action comic about a group of superpowered middle schoolers fighting evil spirits and investigating paranormal activity in their hometown. http://www.paranatural.net/comic/archive

Spoiler

I enjoy this comic as it lines up pretty closely to whatever my sense of humour is. A lot of funnily drawn expressions, puns, and other types of word play. Also spends a lot of time satirising anime/manga tropes. Probably my personal favourite.

Tiger, Tiger by Petra Nordlund. Fantasy, (copied from website) A young noble lady steals her brother's identity and his ship to sail across the world to find love and adventure, and to write a book about her favourite subject: the fascinating life cycle of sea sponges! http://tigertigercomic.com/comic/archive
It should be noted that this comic may contain some mature content in future updates. Currently it's just the occasional swear, but that may escalate.

Spoiler

This comic is way better than the blurb makes it sound. It was an Eisner Award nominee this year!

Lavender Jack by Dan Schkade. Thriller/mystery (ctrl+v) What begins as a simple game of cat and mouse leads the two opposing forces of Detective Ferrier and Lavender Jack down a rabbit hole of mysterious organizations, betrayal, and lost love. https://www.webtoons.com/en/thriller/lavender-jack/list?title_no=1410

Spoiler

This one is super tight in terms of art and writing. Doesn't have the common webcomic problem of going on forever--the first season finished this week. Also an Eisner nominee this year!

image.thumb.png.567dda48962addb13be4bedea8c0e918.png

Lackadaisy by Tracy J. Butler. (ctrl+v) Q. What's this comic about? A. It's about a gang of tenacious (if not shady) characters running a St. Louis speakeasy in the era of Prohibition. I suppose it falls somewhere in the realm of historical fiction, parody, dark comedy, and abject nonsense.

Spoiler

Oh my lord this comic is good. The research is 10/10, the writing 15/10, and the art 20/10. Updates are very infrequent, but there is a hefty archive and a lot of extra content. If there is one comic you read out of this list, choose this one.

Rising Sand by Ty Dunitz and Jenn Lee. Fantasy. (ctrl+v) Erj is a world kept alight by a sun that has orbited faithfully since recorded memory—and now, that faith is faltering. A band of extraordinarily unlikely heroes will try and keep the sky itself from falling while facing threats they could never have imagined. So, you know, the usual. https://risingsand.glass/post/141148587674/rs001-welcome-to-rising-sand-looks-like-dals-in

Due to extreme graphic violence and the occasional boob, Rising Sand is for mature readers only. Hopefully, you’ve read this page.

Spoiler

Excellent worldbuilding, stellar art, and solid writing makes this one just... quality.

Honourable mention goes to Never Satisfied by Taylor Robin. An on-going webcomic about Lucy Marlowe, a magician's apprentice competing against other apprentices for an important magical government position, dealing with issues of class differences and how hard it can be to understand others.

Happy reading.

Gosh darn to heck

Forgot to mention Tellurion by Matt Rhodes the art director at Bioware Edmonton. Entirely wordless fantasy adventure story with absolute top notch art. Every single image is extremely high level technically and the visual storytelling is phenomenal. Every little detail is well thought out.

Features a robot character so that's an instant 10 from me. But then it's so much more than that.

https://tellurion.ca/pages/tellurion

'nother thing I forgot: Tiger, Tiger features a character named Janos.

Spoiler

An objectively inferior Janos, but a Janos still.

First one is Space Boy (quite popular. You may have heard of it before):

https://www.webtoons.com/en/drama/space-boy/list?title_no=400

Next one is Miss Abbott and the Doctor (more of a late 1800s/early 1900s romance comic)

https://www.webtoons.com/en/romance/miss-abbott-and-the-doctor/list?title_no=707

^ These were the first two I ever read on Webtoon and are so far my favorites, though I can share a few others I'm following. You might know the artists.

Glitch Pulse: https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/glitch-pulse/list?title_no=135293

Wing Time: https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/wing-time/list?title_no=108824

Surprised nobody has mentioned Order Of The Stick yet. The first bunch of pages has rather low art quality, but it gets noticably better after the first 100-300 pages. This is not a joke, the comic's been going on for years and reached well over a thousand pages.

Spoiler

It is a D&D themed comedy. Artstyle sample:

P.S. Space Boy is good

I literally saw this and thought I should say Order of the Stick. Dammit.

But, luckily, nobody's mentioned Scoobs and Shag yet. It's a pretty run of the mill webcomics meme thing which soon devolves into a battle manga with some really well made fight scenes.

This is not a joke. It's real. My clipboard isnt working.

Creepbury Close by BLONGE! Comics

Tucked away in a less-than-cosy corner of a seemingly abandoned suburb is Creepbury Close. It is where all the classic (and slightly more obscure) monsters spend their afterlives working jobs, raising families and twitching curtains. If you thought your neighbourhood had it's share of weirdos, you ain't seen nothing yet...

I love the husband and wife team that work on their comics and this one me and my father really like this series. I would love to see a company work with Blonge comics to make it animated.

Yes wholesome! Also if you draw fanart and send it in, you may get featured in the future but it'll take a while, whew!

You have to read Broodhollow, it's your homework now. An unassuming though deeply engrossing mystery webcomic were our encyclopedia salesman Wadsworth Quentin Zane desperately tries to keep his world together by exploiting emerging patterns. It has shocking pay-offs that made me actually gasp out loud.

Caught up on Broodhollow. Can confirm, it is a very good comic. Very good.

As for a listing, Blanco by CB Webb is also very good. Has an excellent watercolour-ish art style. Kind of mysterious, and some of the imagery might be disturbing (for example, one character has to repeatedly pull petals out of his skin. Also blood and stuff)

Blanco is a webcomic by CB Webb about a man trying to understand the circumstances surrounding his own death while searching for the home that got away from him.

Yoooooo guys I found a gem.

Mare Internum by Der-shing Helmer is an award-winning online science fiction graphic novel about the isolated inhabitants of the planet Mars, and the ability of life to persist through darkness.

Content warning: please note that this comic contains material that may be disturbing to sensitive viewers, including depictions of mental illness and abuse. All content has been thoroughly researched beforehand and will never be utilized for shock value.

Sakana by Mad Rupert is a slice-of-life, romantic comedy (a sli-li-rom-com, if you will) that takes place in the Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo, Japan. If follows the lives of a few 20-somethings working at the market, their friends and family, and all the wacky situations they constantly find themselves in despite their best efforts. Basically they all want to date each other, but they're all terrible at it, and also there's lots of seafood involved.

I like this way more than I feel like I should, based off that blurb. It's consistently funny, the characters are diverse and compelling, the draftsmanship is solid, and the pacing is fast enough that my monkey brain doesn't get impatient. I've had several audible laughs from this comic. It's good, you guys.

It's been nearly a month. Has anyone been comic-starved?

Grass of Parnassus by K&S Immonen is a surreal science fiction comic hosted only on Instagram. They do amazing work within the limitations of the site (though it does help that they have an impeccable artist). There isn't exactly a linear plot, just weird space stuff.

I'm not really good when it comes to describing things, but there's a comic called Fortuna out there that's semi-interactive and the decisions you make early on may not make a difference at first, but have a huge impact later. I guess I could only describe this comic as sci-fi and 4th wall breaking (if that's even a genre) as the plot revolves around you (the player) who gets a game from a friend that completely destroyed the game before giving it to them causing some weird things to happen.

The comic is still being made and you can leave suggestions as to what happens next to the creators who update it about...once a month I think? It takes so long I assume because the comic is made by people who don't speak english and the only way they have of translating is google translate (so there's a lot of spelling errors too, but I don't blame em')

Anyway, here's the comic link.
