Don't Starve Together Roadmap 2019

Imagine buying the game and seeing you have to pay money or grind skins for weeks to get enough spools so you could play "that character" you saw on some server.

Oh, the suffering! How could anyone bear it?!?

But seriously, paying for a DLC is not on the table, and this is not so different from buying a skin. Compared to all the free content the game is getting, it’s not too much to ask.

We are still deciding the final price of these characters, but we currently think they will be $6.99 USD each, which includes a full character skin set. You will also be able to weave the characters with spool.

Throwing off my money anyways!

(yes, we heard you)

I can actually feel the collective pain from all the developers at Klei that had deal with the hundreds of character rework discussions essentially saying the same thing on this forum enveloped in this one sentence. It gave me a good chuckle to be honest haha.

Paid DLC characters....ugh. Not sure that sits well in my stomach, brain or wallet. Yes, sure, it'll be weavable, but how much is it gonna cost to weave? If it's something absurd like 10K spool, i'm really not gonna appreciate that. I get the counterargument just fine, but still, uh, yikes. It's way too early to pitch a fit yet, I suppose, so instead i'll just hope that the weaving price isn't too painfully high. I definitely am not feeling dishing out whatever double-digit dollah-dollah it ends up being to get 4 characters that I will inevitably not use at all because i'm a horrendous Wendy main now and forever potentially not care much for, depending on how it plays out.

The rest of this is awesome. I am a lore fool, so any excuse to learn more about them characters is great.

We found that it was exceedingly difficult for us to run these events on console and as such underserved our console players.

Most game developer would have ignored it like if nothing happen. Klei on the other hands are totally open and honest about it which I think is worth saluting and I appreciate.

New character? Now my dream of playing as Charlie are coming back to haunt me :)

Hello everyone!

It’s been a while since I’ve made a post here, I’d like to share with you our plans for 2019, which are extensive!

First, I’d like to recap what happened in 2017/2018:
In 2017 we launched the Forge, and followed it up in 2018 with the Gorge. The idea was that we could offer a new way of playing Don’t Starve Together, in a limited-time format. We were a bit burned out on creating DST core game content and this format allowed us to try something a bit different, so we made these crazy game modes and provided them to the community for free.

Every time we launched these events, tons of players came to play, and in every instance we hit our highest ever DST concurrency. We’re super thrilled that so many people came to play the our weird game events!

While we enjoyed the events and are happy with the result, there were some drawbacks:

  • They took WAY longer to make than we expected, so we weren’t able to make as much content as we wanted, and it left little time to do things like bug fixes and Quality of Life updates for the base game.
  • Because we run the servers for these events, we also incurred the cost of these servers. Those of you who have been here a while know that Don’t Starve was not architected to be a multiplayer game, so running them on our servers was extremely inefficient. In short, even though we loved that everyone came to play, the item sales were only barely covering the costs of the servers.
  • We found that it was exceedingly difficult for us to run these events on console and as such underserved our console players.

It has been a valuable experience and we think the game is better for it, however we feel that it’s time that we turn our attention back to the core Don’t Starve Together experience: surviving together.

Here’s what we’re doing for 2019:

Brand New Content
The team is now working on brand new content for Don’t Starve Together. Survivors will be able to travel to new lands with new biomes, creatures, and more.

The first drop of this new content will come in mid-April, and we will continually be adding to the content every couple months afterward. As we said before, we think it’s important that everyone can play together and we don’t segregate our audience, so all of this content will be available for free to everyone!

Character Refreshes
The team also felt it was high time we gave our core cast some love (yes, we heard you). Over the course of the next year, we will be bestowing every character with revamped abilities, and give a glimpse into their backstory. Our goals here are to make each character unique, interesting and valuable in their own right and we expect this to be game changing in many ways.

Starting in March with Winona, we will be releasing a character refresh once a month.

These character refreshes will again be free to all players, and we will be selling new skins for these characters on the month they are refreshed.

In addition, the Triumphant, Guest of Honor and Survivor skin packs will be available to purchase for the character on that date. All owners of these skins prior to that date will be upgraded to an “Heirloom” rarity, with a higher unraveling value.

New Characters Enter the Fray
A fresh batch of four characters have been unwittingly ensnared and brought into the world. These new survivors will be released into the wild starting in Mid-March, and a new one will be released every 2 months.

We are still deciding the final price of these characters, but we currently think they will be $6.99 USD each, which includes a full character skin set. You will also be able to weave the characters with spool.

Since we do not want to charge players for the new world content, these new characters will be our main way to fund development of this new content.

Console Development
We are working hard on keeping the console versions of the game up to date. Specifically, we are investing in technology to allow us to more quickly update the game without going through lengthy certification on every small change, and we've also added more staff to work exclusively on updating the console versions.

We're happy to say that the next update for the Year of the Pig King event will launch within 2 days of the PC version.

Quality of Life, Twitch Drops, Etc.
We will also be continually updating the game with bug fixes, QoL updates, new skins for Twitch drops, and more things that we’re not quite ready to announce yet.

Speaking of which, the Year of the Pig King update is going live on Thursday! Long Live the (Pig) King!

--
And that’s it folks!

In short, we are significantly increasing our support of Don’t Starve Together in 2019 with new game content, character refreshes, new stories to be told, new characters, and new skins.

Thanks so much for playing this crazy game, once again. I’m still amazed at how it’s evolved over the years. Please give us your feedback and thoughts!

so much great on the way, so much news, but what I wanted to hear was: Congratulations console players, now you can buy the Skins you want, help to sponsor the company, and be happy!

it's no use getting new content, if we can not have the Skins, what's the purpose of it? we play the whole event to have enough reels to have a single head, we have to shred everything we have for this, since even for us who have no option to buy, drops are 90% profile icons ... I have more than 700 hours of this game, but I do not know if I should believe anything

Not sure how I feel about the new characters costing money. I get that developing new content will cost money so how about charging for a "beta" access to the new characters but having a way to unlock them, maybe like a metheus puzzle

Considering how much they already gave us for free (including the game itself for some people!) and how well they handle skin mechanics I don't mind tossing them more dosh for characters.

So after all ... my small feedback :p

• New content, new biomes, creatures? I LOVE IT. I waited since end "A New Regins". Im so *** happy! <3

• Rework characters? Amazing, few characters were need more love and new mechanics.

• New characters? A M A Z I N G, but maybe 4 is too much for start? OMG Klei u trying to add so much more and i dont know - should i love it or hate it?! Are u really crazy! :D but i love it and hate in same time!

• I never played console, but i think console players should be happy :) But they still waiting for Forge/Gorge? I think u should add something other for their. Like boss from Forge and foods for crockpot from Gorge. And no, PC shouldnt be angry, come on we had events when they just waited :/ its unfair!

• Year of Pig King? I LOVE IT, i hope it will be great like other lunar events!

• QoL? Nice, nice! Nothing is more perfect like QoL in survival game :D

• Twitch drops? Hmmm new skins sounds really great. But if u wrote about payable characters maybe isnt bad idea for adding spools like common random drops? Not 1000 spools, but 5 or 10 or 25? Between new skins people just stop watching streams :< and content creaters lost people or having just people like "parasite".

5 years with Don't Starve and Klei ... and still amazing like when i started playing. Thank u for the best years and i hope more years together!

(Deep breath)

AHHHHHHHHHHH!

Gonna have to wait an awfully long time before anything exciting happens, however. The Year of the Pig King will probably entertain us for a while, but I reckon I'm going to need to dig up a new hobby to pass the time until our little pyromaniac friend gets some love, many moons later.

Console players want to buy skins. Please give us the chance to have the same Computer items.

We're working on it, but content takes priority so we stopped working on it a little while so we can get our updates timed better. Now that we're on track we're getting back to allowing skins to be purchased on console.

We actually had a value in mind that was going to be posted originally and we didn't like it. Turns out we're gonna be taking a long hard look at spool value and the time it will take to get the characters to weave them, including possible adjusting drop rates and spool gain.

Our goal is to make enough money to make it worth our time, of course. However, we definitely want people to feel that weaving is a fair and acceptable alternative and not something impossible or unreasonable.
