This topic was created to help new players and allow veterans to argue, discuss and share their tips, tricks and strategies with different characters. This topic will be a place for new and veteran players alike to learn things they did not.

You can argue and discuss here BUT do not put in misleading information (Example Willow teaches players to fear insanity). Arguments should NEVER include swearing, boasting or any bad info. Players are encouraged to do research on certain subjects before stating a fact in case the game updates or the fact is false. NEVER end a discussion/argument without both parties agreeing to confirm the fact is correct (Example Lanterns VS Miner Hats). Either one party is correct or the debate continues.

Please think about the player base before stating your fact. An idea might only work for veterans or certain characters. If so, please state the requirement in BOLD LETTERS.

Players should ask questions and answer them without any arrogance/cockiness. Answering an obvious question with "Duh stupid" or "What a noob" is unneeded.

I would say lantern, bcuz miner hat is easily replaced by moggles. Not to mention, lantern has a much bigger light radius. Use miner hat when you don't like the moggles but be careful of slurpers, they can yank off your hat. Lantern on the other hand allows you to wear football helms while still able to see and work in darkness. Just be careful of splumonkeys, dang thieves will steal your lantern if you put it on the ground.

Though its up to you to decide whether to use lanterns or miner hats.

I say Lanterns are better than the miner hat.

And when slurpers slurp the miner hat off and there are some splumonkeys...

they take it!

Using the beehive as a point of reference, you can see that the miner hat has a larger radius. Although it's not shown, I'd also like to note that the light radius of a dropped lantern is identical to when it's equipped.

I'm not trying to personally attack you or anything, but I find it a bit humorous that you mention to "not put in misleading information", and then in your next post, you do exactly that.

OMG I am truly sorry. I have researched the lantern on the DS wiki and it showed this: The Lantern has a larger light radius than any other mobile light source, therefore it is ideal for spelunking. I am very sorry if I misleaded you. I did not actually know that the miner hat has a larger radius since i never used it.

Thank you very much for clarifying. I never thought the wiki is incorrect, sorry.

It's all good. At the very least we've fixed some misinformation on the wiki. I personally thought their radius was identical until I did a side by side comparison.

Back on topic of Miner Hat vs. Lantern:

I vote miner hat. At least, most of the time. I find it much easier to always have my hand slot free to swap out various tools without having to drop my light source each time. It also allows me to use my walking cane more freely. However, in the winter I prefer using the lantern over the miner hat so I can keep a piece of warm apparel on.

Since most of the higher tier characters' strengths and weaknesses have been argued about a lot (as i can gather) let's move onto the "mid-low tiers" sorta characters:

Who would be the best beginning character? Wilson and his beard, Willow and her affinities to fire, or Winona with her peculiar perks?

I would say Wilson since he is the most average character. His beard helps with survival and allows him easy access to meat effigy.

Willow requires more skill with her sanity management and some of her strats are less-known.

For Winona she is average overall and can be used as starter character but are often used by builders for quick-crafting. She relies on warm clothing compared to Wilson.

WInona's best and most useful perk for me is her trusty tape. A trusty tape requires 3 grass and 1 silk. A sewing kit has 5 uses, and can be crafted with 8 silk, 2 hound teeth, and 1 log. Multiplying the TT recipe by 5 = 15 grass and 5 silk which is much easier to obtain, but only in seasons like autumn or spring. That problem can be averted with a Wickerbottom, allowing an easy way to get grass in winter/summer.

These trusty tapes come in handy, as they can be used to repair seasonal clothing and thermal stones.

Unrelated Note: See internet? I haven't forgotten!

That is true, i just wished it repairs armor instead of clothing. First of all, it will not clash with the Sewing Kit. Second of all, it will be more desirable instead of a choose-one-depending-on-the-situation item. Thirdly, it would make more sense as you use tape to fix tools and armor, not clothes. Winona can be used very well but her perks are just, too mundane. There is so much more Klei can improve her instead of just slapping her on the character selection without much thought. Her fast crafting perk is only good in situations where you really need it. Due to lag and sometimes brain lag you probably won't even be able to use the 0.5 second advantage. The only times its great at is wall spamming to get loads of walls. Her second perk is quite redundant as usually u have a torch ready at night. I mean the only reason you get hit by charlie is either you don't have enough resources for a torch or you have to craft a torch cuz u forgot. In the latter situation, her first perk would have taken care of it. In the former one, you are only delaying your death. Unless you find a source of light in those few seconds you bought, you will still fall into charlie's hands. Her last perk is reliant on you using clothing. In autumn it would be redundant since you don't really wear any clothing. It is great in winter but unless you spend loads of hours playing on a single server or you spawn in close to winter, it is also redundant. The best thing you can do is give it to someone.

Great fact for survival during Winter as Willow: Extinguishing Technique.

No warm clothing for winter? Freezing? Using Willow? No worries then! Willow's immunity to fire for a few seconds plus her lighter will help you survive!

1. Find a tree. When burnt the tree can drop charcoal which can be further burnt. Find a tree and check to see if there is any nearby burnables. If there is, jackpot! If not, just place a grass or twig.

2. Burn the tree. After a few seconds of burning you shouldn't be freezing anymore. Plus you get sanity!

3. Extinguish the smouldering burnable. When you extinguish a smouldering burnable you take FIRE dmg and increase your temperature. Willow is resistant to fire dmg allowing you to keep extinguishing the smouldering burnable at no cost to increase your temperature. Soon you will be close to overheating. Now head out and gather resources!

4. Rinse and repeat. Wearing warm clothing allows you to "store" your temperature for a longer time. You can heat up your thermal stone too by dropping it next to the fire. With this technique, you can overheat in EVERY single season! Willow is very good in winter, next to OVERCHARGED WX-78 and FULL-BEARDED Wilson. If you are insane, put 2 burnables so you can extinguish them more.

For summer, you can also take advantage of Willow's bad perks!

1. Find Green Caps. They are pickable during dusk.

2. Eat 2 RAW Green Caps. To reduce your sanity. You will start losing temperature. Just what we wanted!

3. Stay under trees and wear cool clothing. Voila! You have succesfully defeated summer! You can still overheat, it just requires 20 more degrees to overheat you! You will overheat at 90 degrees! Normal overheating degree is 70. Combined with thermal stone, trees, pretty parasol and straw hat, you will live easily in summer! Who says Willow sucks?

Same for me except for winter I would still use the miner hat over lantern. I prefer lantern for ruin rushing though.

One thing that I don't think have been said about the lantern is that it is the only portable light source that the light radius from it decrease linearly with the durability of it.

So from biggest to smallest the light radius from portable light source goes as follow : miner hat > lantern > torch > magiluminescense > willow lighter. Pretty sure that the torch is providing slightly more light than the magiluminescense and willow lighter barely any light but I could be wrong. I excluded stuff like the morning star since I don't know the range of its light radius and its primarily intented to be use as a weapon not a light source.

OP-Charging

What is OP charge? OP charge is basically striking WX78 with a load of lightning strikes. This over-overcharges WX78.

Pros

WX78 is overcharged most of the time and is great in winter and can clear caves and ruins like a beast.

WX78 will ALWAYS be at full health after OP charging.

WX78 gains all the perks from overcharge.

Neutral

WX78 is ALWAYS insane after OP charging.

Nearby mobs, characters and lightning rods can take and be hit by lightning meant for WX78.

CONS

Requires WICKERBOTTOM to OP charge.

Can cause fires due to lightning.

Wickerbottom and characters near her aside from WX78 needs to have protection from lightning or move away.

Steps:

1. Get a Wickerbottom and a WX78. Both must consent to doing this ritual.

2. Get a red gem. We need it to create The End Is Nigh! Book.

3. Get a Shadow Manipulator. Craft the book there. Wickerbottom starts with 2 papyrus and only needs 1 red gem to craft The End Is Nigh!

4. Get a item that protects you from lightning. Its ok if you don't want. Wickerbottom will wear the item.

5. Stand in a clearing. Its best if there is no burnables nearby. Lightning CAN grief and destroy your base.

                          OR

5. Before fighting a boss. Use The End Is Nigh! Fight. If WX78 is low healthed while fighting boss, use the book again. You will grant WX78 full health.

                             /\

                          EXTRA

6. Use the book. WX78 will be OP charged by the lightning strikes and pretty much never dies from darkness and freezing.

7. Use as needed. Save the uses on the book as a secondary rez or to OP charge WX78 again. Secondary rez means giving someone full health but it only works if they are not dead. It works like a revive but doesn't actually rez. Best use is when WX78 is low on health.

Umm... So yesterday I played as Wickerbottom and another friend of mine played WX-78. However when I used the The End Is Nigh! Book, WX-78 didn't get struck by lightning. I used it like 2-3 times and still no luck. Are there any tactics to overcharge WX-78 with Wickerbottom?

Edit: I did wore a lightning protection helmet and there were no mobs/trees on the screen.

That is weird, is WX78 standing close to you? The book has a short range. That is pretty weird though since WX78 basically acts as a second lightning rod. Was the lightning strikes random? Huh. He didn't get struck even once?

See time 1:57. WX78 DID get charged, why did yours not work?

Woodie's Werebeaver technique when you can't get resources!

1. Find trees. Preferably a forest.

2. Chop all dem trees. Only stop when you turn into the werebeaver.

3. Do what you need to do! Werebeaver can chop trees, mine rocks, dig up stuff, hammer stuff, kill stuff AND has night vision! Perfect if you can't find flint, twigs and grass. We all know the tragedies of joining public servers.

Werebeaver form deals 27.5 dmg, has night vision and all the tools' usage. He has 25% dmg reduction, 70% water resistance and has the insulation equivalent to wearing an eyebrella and puffy vest at the same time which is 240 for both heat and cold. The Werebeaver has, funnily enough, 0.1 extra speed modifier making it faster than most characters.

That's right, he didn't get struck even once. And he stood extremely close to me, and yes, the lightning did struck randomly on the map. No mods installed by the way. I'll try again tomorrow if in case it was a bug. Thanks for your help :D

When you casted The End is Nigh were there any lightning rod or volt goat nearby (it can be a few screen away from you)?

Actually since Wickerbottom's The End Is Nigh! Book has very small range, it cannot hit mobs that are few screens away. Its hits were random which is how it works before WX78 steps into its range. Are you lagging? Did you switch lag prediction on? If you did, there might be a possibility that you and WX78 are actually far apart when you use your book. Lagging also causes you to misjudge when should you stop moving. It will seem like you used the book and WX78 did not get hit, but perhaps in reality you used the book in a different location? Lag prediction messes up your game.

I carry both a lantern and a miner hat.

Miner hat because I want my walking cane, and less swapping around of tools. My miner hat tends to run out of battery more often.

Lantern because I mainly use battle helm for armour. When i have to fight something more dangerous, like terrorbeak, i drop my lantern and kite. The lantern would also serve as a backup light in case the miner hat went out, so I dun need to carry light bulb when I am on a relatively short expedition.

and if there is a question of why battle helm for armour:

battle helm is rather cheap

i like my backpack/krampus sack too much

my wigs would love to make battle helm
