I don't know where did this trend come from but in all modern application, operating the window by the scrollbar is pretty uncomfortable. I'm fine with sorting arrows, and checkboxes are huge in my opinion, not too small. Maybe you have UI set to too small? I have UI scale at 90% and windows are still taking up way too much space on my screen, making the most often used controls even larger would only make things worse.
